Quilting on 301A?
 

I just pieced my first quilt on my 301A (a baby quilt) - next step is to quilt it - not sure if to do it on my "newer" plastic machine, or try on the 301A - if so - what feet do you use? I am open to SITD or FMQ.

All of my quilts are done on the 301A. I bought the foot from sew-classic. I would not use any other machine. You screw the feed dogs down, put your quilt under and go. I quilt heavily and there is no skipped stitches. I got rid of brand new Pfaff and bought some 301s. I use Isacord thread for quilting and love it- strong and thin with a bit of shine. I just checked and Sew Classic does have the best price on the Slant, clear, free motion and darning foot. It's on sale for $6.69. I didn't check their shipping cost.
Just so you know what to expect.....You have to wiggle and manuever it around some to get it on and lowering the needle all the way down makes it much easier to put the foot on. Secondly, you may notice some noise or clicking as you sew, but don't let that worry you.
Since the 301 has three thread guides prior to the needle, and that's really overkill, I have removed/eliminated the middle thread guide all together(just undo the little screw and it's easily removed). Then you don't have any problem with the arm of the FM foot rubbing & clicking. When you return to normal straight stitching it really isn't necessary to reinstall the middle thread guide; you don't need it.
If you're considering purchasing a new Slant walking foot.....I'll just share with you with you that not all of them work/fit on the 301. I have found that some fit the 401 and other slant machines well, but not the 301. However, I found a vintage walking foot that works very well on my 301's. Just say'in.

There are no walking feet on the market that fit the feed dog width of the 301. They are all too large and are designed for zig zag capable machines. They may "work" on the machine, but they aren't doing what walking feet are designed to do and that's to feed fabric in conjunction with the bottom feed dogs. Jenny clearly specifies this on the walking feet she sells for the 301. Honestly, they're not worth buying. Just lower the foot pressure and off you go.

I have a 301A and I do have the manual but I still do not know how to put the feed dog down. Please help. Thank you and I love this board it has helped me so much.

Do most of my sewing on my 301A. Love it. Have another 301A in the living room, but with the daughter living with us now, can't get to it. I have a 301 in a trapizod cabinet that my future DIL found on the curb in Dallas.(for trash pickup) It needs adjusting, just haven't had time yet.
Most of the free motion I do on my machine, I just cover the feed dogs, seems like when I lower them on this machine, everything goes south. LOL Good luck!!

I love my 301 for FMQ so much I purchased a second one for back up, even though my Necchi does a decent job. I use a different foot, but the sew classic seems to do the job for others.

The feed dogs drop by turning a knob under the machine way back on the left side. I had to use pliers the first time.

Same here - the 301 is a sturdy little machine!
