I wouldn't use fingernail polish remover. Most of it has acetone in it and that will go thru anything and ruin it.

I have used hand gel. There is alcohol in it so test first.

It's 60 - 100% Isopropyl alcohol! And 3-7% methyl alcohol.

The bore cleaner is better but still has a lot of alcohol:
1 Ethanol 15 ‐ 40%
2 Kerosine (Petroleum) 15 ‐ 40%
3 Oleic Acid 15 ‐ 40%
4 Amyl Acetate 5 ‐ 10 [I think this is banana oil/paint thinner.}
5 Ammonium Hydroxide 1 ‐ 5%

I use a dry erase pen.

Doodle all over the sharpie marks, then wipe it off like you would any dry erase mark.

I've removed from Computers, Sewing machines and all sorts of things this way. The finish on the 301 isn't as delicate as the finishes on the older black ones (which you should never use alcohol on - it will remove the shellac), but I would still test somewhere inconspicuous. It's also possible that the marker may have seeped in a bit. If that's true, you'll get some not all of it off.

That's kinda brilliant! How did you figure that out? But I wonder if there is alcohol in the dry erase pens.

Here's what Sanford (http://www.cmcss.net/documents/safet...%20MARKERS.pdf) says: Pigments, resins, methyl isobutyl ketone (108-10-1), n-butyl acetate (123-86-4)

That said, not all pens are created equal. There's a chance that some of them are alcohol based, so test first.

I saw this once when I worked at the school board. One of the trainers picked up a pen and started writing. A few of us "gasped" when we realised that it was a sharpie. He said "ooops!" but already knew the trick, and showed us. If you google it though, it's fairly well known.

Try spraying it with hairspray, let it set a minute and wipe with a damp cloth. This works to remove ink from clothing.

Uh oh. Methyl isobutyl ketone is used as a solvent for lacquers.

n-Butyl acetate is also used as a solvent in the production of lacquers

The ingredient in hairspray that removes ink is alcohol.

Some felt tip pens have water soluble ink, some don't (like sharpies). I think I would try dishwashing liquid first, then WD40 (or similar) if that doesn't work. WD40 is mostly kerosene. Ditto Liquid Wrench, but it smells worse.

But if it's an alcohol based ink then it may have seeped into the clear coat, as Tammi said.

Sheila, someone may correct me, but to the best of my knowledge, the 301s and their kin were enameled. It's a much hardier finish than the clear and shellac. Some of the concerns we have with a clear coat or a shellac may not be present with an enamel. That said, I don't know what turns enamel to goo.

Sheluma 10-26-2013 11:55 AM

Tammi, you're right that the 301s, 401s, etc. have a hardier finish than the black machines.

What would you use on red felt tip markings, I don't know what kind. On an old wooden machine case?
