Removing old adhesive on machine bed
1 Attachment(s)
I just purchased a 1946 Featherweight 221 that someone had put tape on the bedplate mark marking seam allowance I assume. The tape was removed at some point and the adhesive stayed behind. I am totally ecstatic with the machine and it is super clean and in great condition other than the tape. Runs like a champ! Any input on how to remove the tape gunk without damaging the shellac? Thanks!! Becky

Hi,
Welcome to QB! I don't know if Goo Gone or WD-40 will be ok on the enamel of the bed, but I know it takes old adhesive tape off in a flash...I'm sure one of the "vintage machine pros" will be along soon to give you some help...I am a "newbie" to vintage machines. Here's a link for featherweight info: http://www.novamontgomery.com/singer...-the-month.htm Kif |
Also look at the top of this area at the sticky notes, there's great info there..and here is another link to some good info:

I don't know about the goo b gone, I would really hestitate on that, but I would think that WD40 would be o.k., since it is mainly fish oil and really works for removing lots of things from ones hands, etc. But I would check on an inconspicious place first just to be sure, or maybe someone else knows.

i would first try regular cooking oil... it gets the goo off from labels, so would probably do the fw as well. it would not harm the enamel finish. if it works, just wash off the oil with a mild detergent

I used Goo Gone on one of my machines and it worked well...

Try a dab of peanut butter.

My 'Go To' Featherweight site is www.novamontgomery.com. Nova has Tips of the Month and an Index too. She may have already addressed the problem you have. If not, I just bet she would answer your email.

I used goo gone on a small part of a FW and the finish became smudged. I think there are a variety of goo gone products. So beware. Sewing maching oil on the old tape and letting it sit awhile sometimes works and sewing machine oil will not hurt the finish. Good luck.
