what a steal for $30. She is pretty, just needs some TLC. Lucky you.

The cabinet, motor and light are not original to the machine, it used to be a treadle. It's a model 27, one of 50,000 commissioned 10-5-1905.

Cari-in-Oly,
I was fixing to say I have that exact cabinet, and the machine that came in it was my Nanny's. And much newer, from the 1950's or 60's. At any rate it's a pretty machine, and as Lynnie said, it needs some tlc. As I'm not nearly as well versed in vintage machines as the others on here are, I can't say if it's a good deal or not. Every time I hear that or say it, I think of my hubby's grandpa. He used to say, "I reckon it's worth it if someone is willing to, or wants it bad enough, to pay x amount of $$ for it". Good ole Grandpa. :) Regards, Kif Cari[/QUOTE] |

Cari I'm sure that the machine could be made to sew again. There is a great deal of satisfaction, for me, to get these old sewing machines back into working condition. Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |
I cannot add anything to the restoration question. However, my mother had a machine just like this and I sewed on it for my early years. It replaced her Wheeler and Wilson treadle (Oh, I wish I had that machine now!). I was always intrigued by the beauty of the face plate. Ours was in a portable box but could have been dropped into a cabinet. Singer cabinets were pretty standard in that era.

How are you doing sak658? I've heard nice things about model 27, from a friend who use it regularly and others. She describes it as very solid and sturdy, more so than my 201 (which I find very solid and dependable). It's in a treadle and she use it for FMQ and all sorts of things her computerized machine struggles with.
Your machine looks terribe though, I hope we get to see pics along the way. I suspect it will take a few turns with cleaning, oiling and polishing before it's up and running again. |
Poor little baby, doesn't look like she has had any love in decades.
|
I would not be willing to pay that for this machine - it's missing too many parts, and in very poor shape in general.
Now, if you love the cabinet, then $30 is not a bad deal - consider the machine to be free, and find something nice to put in it's place. |
I decided more work than I can give it...so did not purchase it....I do hope it will go to someone who really cares for old machines...it was in a garage sale...hopefully someone will take it and make something beautiful out of it...
I knew it was not in the original condition....thanks for all your information and advice...will relay all of this to the owner...that way they can at least tell a buyer the information...I can always count of QB helping me...thanks again.. |
I think it's a great deal for the price.
|
You were right. Too many missing pieces. You can find better for the same price.
|
I know ladies in my quilt guild who have those old machines, some have several. I think they're awesome and give everyone credit who cleans them up and gets them going. I wouldn't know where to begin to get it working.

I found one on eBay...their asking $499.....
|
Yup, there are some real outrageous prices on eBay - what a seller hopes to get and what they actually sell for can be very, very far apart.
However, sometimes a seller does have something unusual, or with rare attachments, or a very hard to find cabinet, so unless you really know what you are looking at, it's easy make incorrect assumptions. |
