Second hand store Rocketeer

I was in a local second hand store the other day, and noticed this sewing table, looked larger than what I'm used to seeing, and it was buried under dishes so I couldn't get a good look at the table, but I did find a Singer 500 Rocketeer inside...imagine my surprise. The owner told me to a make her an offer, i didn't say anything...she hesitated and said, "How about $20?" I thought, "Are you kidding??!! Of course I'll give you $20." Includes the original accessory box, manual, etc. So it's home today.

A closer look at the table indicates it was either a treadle or capable of having a treadle, from the looks of the right leg. Anybody recognize the table, or what might have been in it? I did not find any tags on it.

Wow Joe! It looks like it's in really good shape and with a nice cabinet. For $20, I would have bought it even though I have no room for another machine! What a deal!

I don't really have a lot of room either, but what was I supposed to do?? Say, "No thanks," and walk out??

I don’t see that table accommodating a treadle, but it does look like it may have originally had a knee power controller, coming from the right side. Beautiful machine and table! I think you got the score of the century.

Wow, that is unique. The wooden treadle legs on the Singer straight leg, only has two legs. That does seem strange to have that support piece in the middle. Maybe a homemade, or maybe a combination of multiple cabinets.

That manual looks brand new and a Rocketeer !

I've taken a closer look at this table, the lower shelf is an add-on, the lighter colored wood holding the machine was made just to hold the machine and fastened to the underside of the table with door hinges. It appears there was a cable lift system on the table at some point, and it's been refinished. It does not appear that the opening in the top was enlarged, if it was whoever did it was somewhat of a craftsman.

Janey, are you thinking this was a Singer table to begin with?

OurWorkbench 07-15-2021 07:35 AM

No, I don't think so at all. I haven't seen any Singer tables or cabinets that had a vertical support in between the front and back legs.

I've seen a couple of White tables that looked very similar.

I was thinking that your cabinet was a blend of a few by a good woodworker.

The Rocketeer is out and almost finished being cleaned up, it spins well and the pattern controls even turn and move!! The table is serving as a piece of furniture, for the time being. I won't put the machine back in.

The Rocketeer is finished! It sews fast and strong, I'm very happy. There was only one original rubber foot, the other 3 were replaced by the homemade brackets holding the machine in the homemade wood frame. I found 3 old feet from a Touch&Sew, I think, and needed a couple of washers to even up the one original foot, but it's stable. It was missing the original removable spool pin, normally sitting inside the machine under the lid, so I substituted a plastic pin, and the red felt pad is my indicator that I've finished and tested a machine (otherwise I lose track...).

I know everyone's favorite machine is different, one of my first machines was a 503 and so I'm partial to Rocketeers, and two of my sisters have there own 500s, now I can join the club!

So glad you have everything working. I'm with you. I don't have any room for another sewing machine, since I already have 4 of them, but I wouldn't have passed up this deal. Congratulations on a great buy.
