Sewing cabinets: Understanding the drawer
 

Second sewing cabinet question of the day... I've noticed in my sewing cabinet drawer on the far right, a semi circle piece of metal. That side of the drawer also seems to be a bit more open in the back than the rest of the drawer. I'm assuming this serves some sort of important function, I just haven't been able to figure out what that function is. Any ideas?

And again, thanks for everyone's help. I've been learning a lot about my vintage machine + cabinet in the last couple of days.

I have that cabinet for my Singer 15-91. Not positive but I believe it is for the oil can. Years ago they were short and squat. I had one for another FW, it had a goose neck too. It will be interesting if someone else knows for sure.

Yes, it's for your oil can.

It would be for the oil can that was available at that time. It would be like the green one pictured at https://oldsingersewingmachineblog.f...-11-20_215.jpg or it could have the spout in the center as pictured at https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/09...g?v=1507764677 Since it would need to fit in the fold out drawer and still be able to close, you can get some idea of the size.

That might explain why some old Singer oilcans are so expensive.

I loved this question and all the answers. I am not much of a mechanical person, just ask my husband....lol, but I do love these older machines. I wouldn't have had a clue about the oil can. I think I am beginning to learn enough to be really dangerous.

I learned something new today. Thank you so much. I always wondered what function this served in a few of my machine cabinets. I would think about it from time to time but figured it was to stabilize the drawer or something like that. Thanks for both the question and the answer.
