Sewing speed tied to belt tension?

I am tuning up a Singer 237 (without much expertise), and we put a new foot pedal on it and cleaned it up, etc., and now it is sewing at one speed only (slow). Is this tied to belt tension?

This video shows the speed control of a another Singer 237. You may find more of that on youtube for comparison:

too tight a belt can create crag.

Thanks for the help -- I watched a few videos and think I can at least tension the belt now. I fear the lack of speed variation with the foot pedal is a separate issue.

Belts only need enough tension to stop slipping, anymore than that puts strain/wear on the motor pulley https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/thumbup.png

Any pics available?

Thanks for your ideas. I think the speed problem is in the foot control, but I sold the machine as-is.
