Singer 160
 

Saw another post about a Singer in KC that was free, and that inspired me to see what was for sale on craigslist in my area.

I found this beauty.......now if only I had $400. It is almost literally around the corner from where I live.

I don't think you'll find many fans of this machine in the vintage machine section;> Probably not many in the other section of the board either. New Singer machines are not what they used to be.

Have you seen one of those machines in person? If not they have a two piece plastic clam body with an aluminum skeleton and stamped metal and plastic insides. The hand wheel is even plastic.

I had a chance to eye ball one and listen to it at the local JoAnn store last year. They are HUBE, easily twice the size of a 66 and have less arch space than a FW. And, they are noisy in the cheap plastic kind of way.

Welcome aboard Rosehawk. Out of curiosity what kind of machine are you interested in? Plenty of reasonably priced vintage machines in the area. In fact if you're near Seattle it's even easier for you to find them than down here.

We had one of those in the store...bounced around like a you-know-what in a by-the-hour motel. Yucky with bells and whistles but they can do some pretty paint on plastic, I guess. You won't find many fans of them in this section but if it trips your trigger, who am I not to enable though $400 is way more than I'd spend on it.

Do not buy this machine at that price. Is available on different sites for much less.

I have a 301 that is on a permanent loan to me from my MIL. I like it a LOT, but it gets heavy to tote around to quilting classes. I would like something lighter than that (16lbs) that is user friendly. Especially since I'm pregnant, I REALLY don't want to be lugging things around.

Other than that, my knowledge of sewing machines could be contained on the head of a pin with room left over.

A friend of mine bought one new (for $300) in August and excitedly told me about it straight afterwards. My reaction was honest and predictable (if you know me). She hasn't spoken to me since. Not sure why: "Argh! It's plastic and Chinese" still seems a perfectly reasonable thing to say :D

LOL!!! I agree with you, and I also am sometimes too honest. I try to keep my big mouth shut....honest I do!!
