"Beaniekins" recently shared her "new" machine with the group. Thank you for sharing with us.
I also wanted one as a treddle sewing machine is what I learned to sew on when taking sewing for a Home Economics class. We also modeled our "outfits" at a spring style show. Even then (late 1950s and early 1960s) it was old, but it's what we had. My mother made many outfits on that machine, including dresses for my sister and I for school dances, proms, and even my wedding dress and the dress for my maid of honor. So when I saw this 1903 Singer at an auction, I had to have it. (My mother had, years ago, gotten rid of her treddle machine.) My son picked up a new belt for it at a store in Chicago that has supplies for antiques. It still works fine. This machine's cabinet is more ornate than my mother's. Latest model Dec. 1903 |

What a beauty! Know you're one happy quilter.

That brings back memories as well to me, I too first learned on a treadle and was so short I had trouble reaching the treadle base. And also we had a spring model show ... I was the one who got to wear the "broom skirt" and box top top that buttoned at the shoulder! I think no one else would of wanted to wear it! lol Sewing was fun and scary in the beginning for me. I did not have a mother who sewed or a sewing machine. My mom found a used table top with a carrying case for me for Christmas in my 8th grade year! I sewed on that until the middle 70's and got a Domestic heavy duty machine which I still have! anyways, it was fun to reminisce. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

Beautiful!!! Thank you soooo much for posting.
I bought a machine just like this (cabinet too!) at an auction over a year ago and have been trying to identify which kind it is. I was going to use it as home decor.... but since joining this site... I want to get it up and going. Wow.... I can't believe it. Mine needs cleaning up and the belt is off.... but I am going to clean the baby up. Thanks again! |
It is beautiful. Good for you to get it.

What a lovely Red Eye. My sis has our grandmother's treadle that is just like yours. She had the cabinet refinished and except for wear on the decals, it is super.

I have this machine it belonged to my mother in law and it's the only one she ever used even though her husband bought her a new modern machine.
She said it just didn't sew like this one. |
