Singer 223, the Model#s close, but it's NO FW!!
 

Just picked up from local ShopGW, this 223. Swung by MOSMG who when asked an opinion said, "I'd throw it away!". When asked why he said, "cause they're too dang HEAVY!" And he's right, but i wasn't concerned about that. Anyway, took her home, cleaned and started oiling when I noticed something seriously WRONG! No slack thread TAKE UP LEVER! Ughhh

Overall, I like the machine, and will search for the #547662 take up lever, even if she's heavy, cause she's treadle-able, and won't need to be picked up often.

Don't feel too bad about the broken off thread TU lever. I had the same thing happen to me with a Singer 66-18 I bought a couple years ago. I learned my lesson and now one of the first things I look for in the listing pics that lever.

Too bad about the lever. Easy enough to not notice it's gone. What size is it? It almost looks 3/4 size in the pictures.

Those are full size machines. I think it would treadle nicely and the bonus is that it does zig zag and blind hem as well as the ss. Those are one Singer made in Japan.

hello everyone im a new sewer and really have no idea to operate this. bought it from the street in my town. i know its vintage. it looks like singer 223 but im not sure. does someone knows what model is this.? the man who selling this doesnt have manual so im having a hard time to google a manual.[ATTACH=CONFIG]490037[/ATTACH] having a problem with this. just bought it because i want heavy duty machine and google lots about singer 223 and they have positive response. the problem is it doesnt work even straight stitch. she eat the thread underneath the bobbin area. i dnt know what to do. im way far to the shop where i bought this and its very heavy. it will be my last option to bring it to the shop to fix it. is there anything i can do?

The needle may goin like a FW and thread like a FW - there may be an arrow on the throat plate - thread that direction - flat part of the needle should hug the needle bar slot. It IS a 223 - I replied to your other post.

That's not a 223, it's a 226. That may be part of your problem.

The one I have just like it is a 223...

oldsewnsew's is definitely a 223. lilebeth's is a 226. The 226 has a swinging door on the faceplate for the cam assembly but w/out a notch like the 224. The 226 also has the light switch on the nose, unlike the 223 and 224.

The 223 does not take cams. It just does ss, zz and blind hem. It could treadle.
