Singer 301 Long bed

The bed on my Singer 301 (long bed) will not stay in the 'up' position. It will tilt up but as soon as you let it go it falls into the open position. Is there a way to fix this problem? It is not a big deal since I have it in a table but would like to know.

Yeah, my black longbed does the same thing. My SMG said that nothing can be done about it, so I attribute it to old age.

Mine does the same thing.

There's a screw on the side of the bed that you can tighten right where the bed lifts up. Have you done so? Unless this screw is stripped in some manner, that should solve your problem. I have no idea why a SM guy would say that.

I had the same problem and discovered that the little washer underneath that screw was missing. It is a very thin screw but it is a bit curved, giving it some spring. My OSMG had one in his misc. screws box so I was able to replace it and my LB stays up again.

Sounds like your cup washer isn't very cup-y any more. You can try tightening the screw, but sometimes the washers are just done. Cup washers are fairly ordinary, so if you've got it, take it to the hardware store and get one just like it. If you don't--and sometimes they break, and you lose the pieces--take the screw out, take it to the hardware store, and find a cup washer that will fit.

Important! When you put it in, make sure the dome side of the washer is facing you! That's what will give it tension.

Thanks for the info - my FW does this.

Glenn Wiliams will have this part. He has 221,222 and 301 parts.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I followed the instructions that Candace gave and was successful in getting the bed to stay up! Thank you!
