Singer 301 Owners thoughts needed please!
 

Best darning foot for this machine for Free Motion work ? (I have not found any vintage ones for it yet)....Best 1/4 inch piecing foot?

I don't FMQ, but I have used my slant shank machines for repair some shirts and really liked them for that. I used a beehive spring that goes around the needle for darning some socks. It worked really well.

I'm not sure about a quarter inch foot for the slant shank, maybe sew-classic.com?? There are also seam guides that screw on to the bed, magnetic seam guide and of course tape and post-it note pads or moleskin.

I have the Sew Classic 1/4 inch foot for my 301. It works fine. I haven't done FMQ on that machine so I'm no help with that.

Edit: I just looked and Sew Classic appears to have a darning/free motion foot for a 301.

My 301 has a marked needle plate with measurements. As long as I am not sewing like a bat out of hell, I am accurate. And if I were sewing like a bat, the 1/4" foot wouldn't help me!
I usually use the not quite right slant walking foot.

I have two 301's..adore them! I have pieced on them for yrs and yrs, and never need a 1/4th foot, the line is right on the metal plate where to place your fabric. Try a test piece, dont watch your needle ever, watch where your fabric slides along just inside that line . then test it, press your sample and measure, and you will have perfect1/4in seam every time, or adjust if you wavered and you will know where to place fabric each time. I have a generic hopping foot for free motion quilting on them if I wanted to use them for that, the feed dogs do drop, but I prefer free motion quilting on another machine of mine, its set up for that all the time. I bought my 1/4” quilting foot with guide at singeronline.com I also got a walking foot there. They have about 12 different feet for the 301A slant machine. My quilting foot is #P60602-G. Love it. The walking foot is great for putting on binding. I just enjoy my 301 as much as my featherweights. But, I can drop the dogs on the 301 as a bonus! Then get to quilting...Good luck That’s It I Quilt.

I bought my FMQ foot from aprils1930sshoppe, though I think it has been renamed to the featherweight shop. It has a large plastic foot, which I reconfigured slightly with a pair of pliers. I also bought a 1/4 foot, which I do not like and a SITD foot, which I do like. I prefer the metal seam guide that screws to the bed of the machine for my 1/4" It seems one has come with every vintage machine. I am looking at a FMQ foot at sewclassic that has a much smaller footprint. I think it would help with visibility.
