Singer 301 question

Do you need to lubricate the motor on the 301 like you do the Featherweight's?

Tom W 04-03-2016 06:05 PM

Yes, there is a single port on the bottom of the motor under the removable cover.

Ms Grace 04-03-2016 06:18 PM

Thanks Tom, would you be able to show me a picture of where it is??
thanks in advance
what should I use?

There is a pdf of the manual on the singer site here: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/down...d14d6145d0.pdf which says no lubrication necessary. I lube mine with Petroleum Jelly since Singer no longer makes the original motor lube. The consensus seems to be that Singer quit recommending lubrication once they stopped making it and started building in obsolescence into the machines. I personally lube both of my 301s and have for the 30 years since I inherited them and they are still running strong.

Thanks so much!
so, I need to remove the bottom cover to get to where I need to oil it?
I wasn't sure where it was

Tom W 04-03-2016 07:32 PM

yep.. no oil though. Original Singer motor lube or Petroleum Jelly only. Otherwise you will damage the motor.

I assume you are taking the top off and oiling and lubing the ports and gears there, too. I oil after every quilt and lube every 6 months.

Thanks for the info!

Nova Montgomery has a special motor lube available. She uses it on FW but it is also good for all old singer motors and gears.

Why spend the money? PJ works, no matter what others say, and it was actually recommended by at least one other manufacturer.
