Singer 401A and Singer 237

Hello Everyone,

I'm so excited! I just got my Singer 401A back from being serviced. I found it in the thrift shop last week and the gears were completely frozen solid...but now she's working again! She didn't come with any attachments or manual (but I found a free manual online) but as luck would have it, the next day I found a 503A with the manual and attachments, and 21 cams (0-21, missing #18)....although the 503A is in very poor shape cosmetically....anyway, I'm really excited to experiment with my new machine!

As for the 237A, I am considering going to look at one tomorrow that is being sold for $30. It comes with the manual, a box of attachments, and a monogrammer. I have heard mixed reviews on this Singer model, and was wondering if anyone has any input? Thanks again..

If it is a 237 you can't go wrong. It was definitely the last Singer built with all metal innards. The satin stitch is to die for, probably the prettiest satin stitch I have ever seen any machine make. 30.00 is a steal. Another cool thing about the 237 - which is making the prices climb - is that it can easily be converted to a treadle just by removing the motor belt and putting a treadle belt on the machine. It will fit right in a Singer treadle cabinet so you would have a zigzag treadle machine with the prettiest satin stitch ever.

Ooooh, it has a great satin stitch? Count me in!! I've been wanting to do applique, but I don't like the satin stitch on any of my machines...thank you so much!!
