Singer 403 - foot pedal plug problem
 

I have a problem with the plug on my foot pedal to my 403 that I am not sure how to fix.

My 403 came as a stand alone (not in a cabinet). I subsequently purchased a cabinet for it, so took the tray off the bottom of the machine to mount it. So far so good, until I went to put the machine down into the cabinet to close the top. At which point the plug for the foot pedal hit the side of the cabinet as I lifted the machine up, which partially pulled the plug out, which bent the prongs (didn't break them off, just bent them out). I bent the prongs back in place, they seemed okay, plugged the machine back in.

I recently moved the machine, so unplugged everything to store it down in the cabinet. After plugging it back in, the foot pedal no longer works (the light comes on, so it is not the power). Examining the plug, it appears that the metal casing on one of the prongs has come off (and I believe it came off in the socket it was plugged in to). Hopefully this is making sense - I have posted pictures below. Also, I seem to have an adapter on my foot pedal. It is an extra plug if you will. Didn't realize this "adapter" thing was superfluous until I went to look at new cords on the Sew Classic site. Wish I had realized that I didn't need the adapter thingy, had I removed it, the cord wouldn't have ripped off when putting the machine into the cabinet - it was that adapter thingy that was sticking out.

So - I believe I need to order a new cord/foot pedal (I don't like the foot pedal I have anyway, too small of a button to push). BUT - that won't solve my problem if the metal casing is inside of where the cord plugs into on the machine. How do I get that metal casing out?

Wow, I've never seen one of those beige adaptors before. On my 401 it plugs directly into the machine. You can't use needle nose plier to grip the piece and pull it out?

I did try with some needle nose pliers. Problem is, there is nothing sticking out to grab, I couldn't seem to get a grip on anything. Will have to try again (or get my husband or son to try). I am hating to think I will need to track down the receptacle the plug goes in to (I don't know what the name of that piece is).

My 401A has one of those beige adapters because it has it's bottom case like yours did. When I got it there was no power or foot controller cords to it so we bought a set from Sew-Classic. The foot controller part number is: SCE197626-CP. That's the standard non-electronic one. My wife also likes it much better than the factory Singer unit with the little stump you gotta push on.

Considering the electrical contact looks to be a sleeve, I'd get a small sheet metal screw and screw it into the broken off part and use that to pull it out.

To me it looks like the prong that should stick out on the machine is covering the prong on the cord plug-in. That would mean the piece should be able to be pulled off the cord prong but would not be able to be put back into the machine. That would likely require a trip to the sewing machine ER. Hope I'm wrong.....

I haven't done anything to try to fix this as of yet - have just been too busy with daughter and grandson moving back home. But there is a metal casing that came off of the plug that should plug into the receptacle on the machine. The metal casing is now stuck in the receptacle. Initial attempts to grab it with needle nose pliers have been unsuccessful. I haven't tried using a small sheet metal screw yet. But that will be what I try next. Then I am just going to order me a new foot pedal/cord from Sew-Classic. Hoping this works and I don't have to take it in anywhere.
