Singer 66 questions:

Did the Singer 66 model/style evolve/change over the years???

I acquired one at a church sale a couple of years ago - and I think it is a 66-16.

What do the -xx mean?

When I looked at the listings, they were 66-16, 66-18, etc etc.

Did the basic style/guts stay the same, or did those change over the years? I think the decals changed over the years.

A: Yes

I acquired one at a church sale a couple of years ago - and I think it is a 66-16.

Q: What do the -xx mean?
A: The last two numerals are variations of the model. The numbers can ID the machine as a treadle, or a hand crank, or an electric or other things too.

Q: Did the basic style/guts stay the same, or did those change over the years? I think the decals changed over the years.
A: The basic internal design stayed the same. The variations were mostly external and had to do with the controls and functioning of the machine. There were quite a few different decals.

All the 66's have horizontal bobbins that can be accessed from the bed of the machine. They had several different decal sets used on them, and also plain black in the 1940s. Don't know if they ever had the crinkle finish...I don't remember seeing one, but I'm probably wrong. They started very early in the 20th century - my 66-1 is from 1909. Minor changes were made to some of the component parts early on, so they are not all interchangeable on all models of 66s.

Okay... Mr Smarty pants..
Can you tell me what Singer 66 I have? How about my 99.. Neither goes backward.. The Singer 66 was a treadle converted to electric.. It is in a table.. Not much more I can tell about it.. I have the number AA573519.. The 99 is in a bent wood box.. They are both is very decent shape.. I can tell that both were a lot.. The 99 came with the manual.. The manual pages had paper towel in between the pages.. and there was a receipt from a sewing machine store from about 40 years ago..
Thanks,
Barri
