Singer Clone - Simplex (would you bother?)

This machine has been for sale for a while. The box is a mess but the machine looks good. They are asking $25. Would you bother with it?

Same machine, more pictures. http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/art/4428421333.html

I have been on the fence for a while.

Not a bad price especially if it has the instruction manual.

Clones are not all the same. My Simplex was a pain to clean up because the bobbin holder opens from the back like the older Singers. No problem getting it apart but I didn't know it had to go back kind of as a unit. I think there are some clones of the real old Singer 15s and some of the newer ones - it may depend on which they were copying. After it got back together it is ok. It will all depend on that particular machine. You want to look things over to make sure all parts are there - just like any other machine. Even then you will find that it needs TLC and that is when you find things out.

Thanks Caroline and Miriam. I don't really "need" another machine, I just would hate for it to end up in the trash. The Salavation Army by me has a clone for sale too. If I am remembering correctly, it was a Royal however, they are asking $100 for it.

This is where I'm at.
It looks to be in good condition and the box isn't perfect but it's not terrible either.

I keep thinking that for $25, it is not a big investment and gives me a vintage machine to tinker with.

I have a Simplex too, but haven't really tinkered with it much~~

sometimes you can get a 99 or 28 for that price. you just need to have a lot of patience and search CL all the time. i am not so much into singer clones as i think i can get the original machine for the same price.
