Singer Fashion Mate 288
 

Hi all,

I am the proud owner of a Singer Fashion Mate 288 that my husband converted to treadle after the motor burnt out. I love it to bits, but Ive always wondered why the blind hem fashion disc (number 3), works the wrong way round. It puts the zig-zag stitch in from left to right. This means I have to jam all my work on the right side of the needle, under the machine, and it gets crumpled up. Hemming curtains is a no no as the excess material won't fit. My electric machine blind hems so that the bulk of the material is on the left when hemming. I suppose I could drag that out every time I need to blind hem, but that feels like giving in. I usually use fashion disc number 7 on a very small stitch length, but that's not ideal. I've trawled the internet and Singer sites for a fashion disc that blind hems so that the bulk of the material is on the left of the machine, but I've had no luck. I have 2 fashion discs that both show the little V stitch on the left and the straight stitches on the right, but when I put it in the machine, it stitches the other way round. (I even tried putting the fashion disc in upside down, but it didn't make any difference.

I wondered if anyone can help.

Welcome to QB, Christine. I just tried my #3 disc on my 319 and it goes the correct way. There is another number on the other side 276303 and looks like the first link below. I downloaded a manual from singer.com and it says that for the model 288 that the blind stitch cam should be 350. It looks like the part number for that is 171340 and it looks like it would go the other way. As does the #32 - 276332.

Or simply - Make sure pictures are smaller than 2MB
Click on red "Reply" button
Click on the paper clip icon
Click browse - choose picture/s. (only 5 allowed per post)
Once they show up as being loaded, Scroll over to the right side and click on "Upload"
After the pictures show up as being attached, you can close that window and go back to the screen to finish posting your post.

Wow, there is the cam I am looking for! Mine looks like the first image, which is the wrong way for me. The other cam has bits that stick out istead of parts that are cut away, so I'm guessing this will be a mirror image. I shall try to purchase a 171340, but I'm pretty sure this is going to be a), difficult to find, and b), expensive. Luckily for me my husband is an engineer with his own workshop and he says he will make me one out of mild steel if I can't find one that is reasonably priced.
I can't thank you eough for your knowledge and time. I have been struggling for years with this stupid pattern disc and this is the first time I thought of asking the experts. What a prannet!

I found one on Etsy and bought it!
It was in Australia, but the delivery costs were worth it. The patterns on the cams are beautiful and I use them a lot for decoration, but it doesn't matter what garment I make, it always needs a hem so this will make my life a lot easier.

That is interesting. I wonder what is different between your machine and the other machines that take the flat discs. As I said, my 319 uses the first #3 (276303) and goes the correct way. I guess you could use #3 (276303) for shell edging so that the fold is on the right rather than the left as instructed in the manual for the 288.
