I thought this was just an older model of one of the many available Singer buttonholers. Is this one specific to certain older machines?

No Christy you can use it with any low shank Singer back to VS models (1880s).
It's a manual adjustment model, as opposed to the template version.
They have the advantage of being able to set any size and gap, disadvantages are it takes longer to set up and they can't do a key hole.
Just buy one of each (I did)
Happy birthday

I have one of each! (possibly more) But they are in "the hoard" and I haven't tinkered with them yet. I've been quilting, not shirt making, so no need for buttonholes. I just was wondering if that older style was specific to certain machines.

Steve,

I don't have one of them. What is it's manufacturer and model number?

Joe

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttonholer Peerless apparently were first in 1887. "The Peerless Buttonholer for use on Singer VS machines was patented in 1887 and made by The Sackett Mf'g Co".
Mine does say Peerless on it. It also says "Singer V.S. No 2".

Mike, Thanks. I've got to keep a look out for one of those. Joe

Whoa Steve, That one I don't have! Is it difficult to set?

Nope, pretty easy actually. I have the instruction sheet as well. I have two complete ones and one 90% complete one.

The nice thing about them is the absolutely variable size, so you can make buttonholes a bit snugger as needed.

Here it is with it's slide plate next to two early "Famous" brand varieties
