Singer Model 99, Conversion to Hand Crank
 

My dear husband picked up a Singer Model 99 from a garage sale this past weekend, serial no. AD94962. The poor little thing had been stored in a barn for several years causing mega rust, rotted domed case bottom, motor and cords all in very bad shape along with years of smoke and dirt buildup. The hand wheel would not turn. I always said I wanted an old machine to tear apart to see if I could get it up and working again - well I got one and love it. The machine now has all parts moving freely but I cannot serioulsy test drive it because I can only trun the wheel by hand. The question being can I convert this machine to a hand crank? I have looked on e-bay and not one hand crank is identified for a model 99. What wheel and handcrank style do I need and is there anything else needed for this conversion? Thank you for any help you can give.

Thank you both. You have answered my questions. I think I am going to try to use the existing balance wheel which is in excellent condition and have the groove machined out for the handle attachment. Thanks again.

I have a 99K hand crank. I bought it on ebay. The little guys sews great . . . even with the tension wire being messed up.

Did you get your 99k converted? I curious about using the same wheel? If one does that the bobbin winder can still be in place I take it. Thank you for any information . I am thinking of converting mine. I have no idea where to start or where to buy a hand crank except from What I have read so far. Thank you for any information!

This is a really old thread, not sure you'll receive any response from the people involved.

You need: 1. a mounting rail under the hand wheel on the side of the pillar, 2. a 9 spoke hand wheel, 3. a (reproduction) hand crank, typically available on ebay, etc, 4. a possible bobbin winder mounting modification.

On 99s I've had with sold hand wheels and then converted to hand crank I had to remove one of the bobbin winder mounting bolts to allow the bobbin winder wheel to adjust properly to the different diameter of the spoked hand wheel over the solid hand wheel.

Sew classic's owner retired. Do a Google search for the handwheel and crank. and you can find what you need. If after conversion, your bobbin winder does not work. Contact me and i will send you what you need.
