This is a picture of my latest find. It is a Singer Slant-O-Matic 500A "Rocketeer" sewing machine in the
cabinet that I got for $45!! All of the drawers were LOADED with goodies worth way more than what I paid for the sewing machine in the cabinet.

I don't know how to rotate the picture!!

Seems like no matter how good a deal I find on one of those it takes 4 - 6 hours to get it cleaned right.

Mrs. SewNSew 11-26-2014 11:42 AM

Nice find! I "lucked" into one for 5.00 and then spent way too much to replace parts and get it working. Yous looks very nice!

Miriam, You must work faster than I do. Even on the cleanest machines I being in, I can count on it taking 2 days.

miriam 11-26-2014 12:06 PM

The first one I cleaned took a year. It was hard to get any kind of info back then. I've done a lot of them - to really have them work right you have to spend considerable time cleaning them sooner or later. I have one some Egor smeared grease all over the place - I don't know what they were thinking. Then it dried HARD but it was a bargain... I had Miss L help me clean it. She was not impressed by the grease job. She knows better.

Oooooh! I LOVE those machines. I want one, bad. But I'm chicken about trying to fix up something that complex so if I get one, it's going to have to be in pretty good shape right from the start which so far has eliminated 100% of the ones I've been able to get access to in person. (Well, aside from the one I saw that was in admittedly pristine condition, but I was not about to pay $485 for it! It wasn't even in a cabinet!)

Yours looks really really nice, even sideways LOL. I'm completely green with envy!

Excellent buy. I think you will enjoy sewing with the Rocketeer, I found one a while back and it is in the house and is one that I use in rotation with my other favorites because it is fun to sew with and has a fun design/look to it.

Here is your photo right side up I hope!

And nice machine. I still haven't ever seen a rocketeer in Australia.

Nice find! I have also been wanting one of these but they are usually too pricey on ebay with shipping and I have not found any in my area. Enjoy your machine. What was in all those drawers?

KLO 11-27-2014 06:38 AM

Nice machine; really nice cabinet; super nice price!!!

Your machine is beautiful. I was ecstatic when I got my 401 with the desk cabinet. I paid $150.00 and love the way it works. Does anything and everything. Sews through leather also. Congrats! More photos please and show the rest of the extra goodies. We love goodies. Like sprinkles on the icing of a cake!!

ladydukes 11-27-2014 08:24 AM

This machine was as clean as a whistle. My DH cleaned and oiled it anyway (my request). The only thing needed was to replace the rubber bobbin winder which cost about $2 or $3.

Congrats on a great find! I love the style of those machines.

I have one and quilted without a walking foot. Later found one and still had great results. Still looking for extra feet.

Congratulations on your Rocketeer, cabinet, and goodies. Use two hands to open the door over and to the side of the needle bar as it breaks easily and is difficult to repair. The hinges are not strong enough. Brace it with your hands and open very carefully. Be gentle. It's rare -- at least in this area -- to find a machine in the shape yours is, and with the needle bar door still intact, too.

I was given a Singer 500 (in a cabinet, with attachments) which is cosmetically as nice as yours. It took more than 15 hours to get that machine cleaned, oiled, lubed, and into proper sewing condition, as it had not been used in many years. Someone had fooled with lots of screws and settings, also. People on this board had very helpful suggestions for what how to adjust it at various points. (Thank you all so much!) It sews beautifully now and I use it often.

The weird thing is I never seem to have to fuss so much with a 503. IMHO they are the better machine.

QuiltingJaguar 11-27-2014 06:22 PM

That is my main machine I bought it before my children started school in Bainbridge, MD they are now in their late 50's. I paid on it monthly. I still have it, had it cleaned recently and its my go to machine. I have a Singer Futura but don't hardly use it because I love my slant one. Hope you got all the cams that go with it too.??

Ladibug 11-27-2014 08:59 PM

Beautiful machine with a nice price point too!!!

Sunflowerzz 11-27-2014 10:23 PM

I have all of the slantomatics different stylesnand the Rockateer is my absolute favorite! I have sewn with all of them and she sews the best and is the most fun to play with...at least for me. :D

ladydukes 11-29-2014 05:29 AM

cricket_iscute, one of the pins was out of the little door, so my DH made a new pin and fixed it in no time flat. Great job, and it works perfectly. The bobbin winder rubber thing had deteriorated so I ordered a package (contained two) so he replaced it as well. Everything now seems perfectly in shape.
