The start of my "All Machines" denim quilt.

I've started a quilt I'm calling my "All Machines" quilt. I intend on using every machine we have to assemble it.
So far I've got a bunch of 6.5" squares cut out and have assembled more 6.5" squares from 3.5" squares.
I'm using any and all denim scraps that I can beg, borrow, or steal from my wife. :D LOL

Here is a pic of Minerva getting the first needle in:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...ingsquares.jpg

After the small squares were assembled I decided to try something. So I decorated some using the Singer 3810 and Alden ... I think:

I'm planning on putting a decorative pattern on each square. It will be interesting to do.

What a neat way to liven up denim. I'm going to do that for a denim quilt (bedcover really) so thanks for the idea.

Cool. Are you going to sew them together or make a rag quilt?

J Miller 06-25-2012 09:48 PM

I'm going to sew the blocks together. Right now it looks like 15 6" squares across X I don't know how many long yet.

What is a "rag quilt"?

Joe

Candace 06-25-2012 10:09 PM

Rag quilts look like this http://images.search.yahoo.com/image...mb=TM3jp1FTyQf

J Miller 06-26-2012 05:30 AM

OK, that looks interesting for one of the next ones. How do you do the fuzzies between the squares?
Or is that just the ends of the denim squares as it unravels?

Joe

You can clip the denim (or other fabric) so that it gets a bit ravely in wash. There are special spring scissors for this job. I happen to have a commercial fabric cutter with a special die that makes the squares pre-cut to ravel. I have done a lot of charity quilts using kids type flannel and all you do is use either a plain straight stitch to make an "x" in the square or a use a decorative stitch to sew the fabric sandwich (with batting or not) together and then sew all the squares together. Maybe that will be your next one.

I like your idea using the decorative stitches on the denim blocks. Definitely livens up the blocks. Also a good way to use up thread. I think I may do this on the next denim rag quilt I make. If you do make a rag quilt, be prepared to "wrastle" with it. They are heavy, heavy. I like mine because it is dog proof and when it is on the bed I can vacuum off the dog hair. I am thinking about making one for each of the dogs so they can have a quilt of their own. But I don't think they may want to give up sleeping on my bed. LOL

irishrose 06-26-2012 07:48 AM

Caroline, you put the dogs' beds on top of your bed. My dogs pout when their bed covers are in the washer. I can't feel sorry for a pair of rescues who now call a double pillow topped Beautyrest Do Not Disturb mattress home. How quickly they become accustomed to some comfort in their lives!

Joe, I like your decorative stitches, especially the one with varigated thread.

My wife made a bunch of small denim quiltets that are laying all over the house. Generally there is a cat on them. They seem to love snoozing on denim so we made them some.

Hi Joe,

Posting pics is a weakness for me. I've only posted one so far of a vintage machine. Many machines and projects to post. Must get on it, or better yet, get up the nerve to try it again.

If you have the time would like to see a picture of the quiltets.

Anamaria,

Here's one. It's about 30"x30", made from denim and fleece.

That is a neat way to dress up the denim. Off to a beautiful start. Would love to see it when you finish it. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like it's coming along. I like what you've done so far. .... can't wait to see the finished product.

J Miller 06-27-2012 05:47 AM

Sewfine, nanna-up-north,

The quilt my wife is holding in the pic above is not my "All Machines Quilt", it is the "quiltet" I mentioned on the first page. It is finished. That design is a PITA for my novice sewing skills to make, so I'm doing something else.
HERE is a front and back view of the quilt that my wife made a couple years ago. It was her first quilt and was made entirely on her Bernina 930.
Top:

Underside:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...t/IMG_0852.jpg

Here is a pic of the Bernina taking a rest and the QC inspector, Fiona, keeping tabs on things:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...t/IMG_0850.jpg
Wifie says there is around 360 7" denim circles and the same number of fleece squares. Lots of work both for her and the Bernina. It took her about 100 hours to make that quilt.

I did make a quilted treadle cover from that design, oh what a pain in the but!!!!!

Here is a pic of that one:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...cs/topside.jpg
And a rear/side view of me sewing on it with my Singer 66 Treadle #1:

This should confuse this thread a bit more .... LOL.

Wow! Nice idea to use up all the denim in the box taking up space under my longarm. Now, if only I could get Mom to to embroider on them for me!

jamsbuying 06-27-2012 07:52 AM

Love the decorative pattern idea!

kitsykeel 06-27-2012 06:05 PM

Joe,
Is that a cathedral windows pattern on the reverse and is it a quilt as you go? I really like the large one your wife made.
A friend who is a rep for a fabric company gave me scads of large samples of denim (blue, brown and tan.) Am definitely going to try what you guys did, but need to decide on some interesting fabrics for the windows. Thanks so much for sharing. Kisykeel

Another QB member posted the directions a few days ago. I want to do one in flannel, I think. I hadn't thought about fleece. That's a really good idea, Elaine.

J Miller 06-27-2012 08:58 PM

The pattern was totally by accident. It was what I had cut up from a bunch of old jeans at the time. I used a circle that was the top to the carryout containers from where I was working for the pattern size.
I have been told that it is a Cathedral pattern by others. I got the idea from another forum we are on as a challenge to finish just one project that year. LOL
I don't think this would qualify as a quilt as you go. I just kept adding more circles around the outside edges until I got the size dimensions that I wanted.

Looking forward to seeing the completed quilt. The decorative pattern on each square is really a nice touch.

J Miller 06-28-2012 07:28 AM

I will definitely post pics as I progress with it.

My wife makes pet tents to sell at craft shows. When she did that quilt she just used the scraps that came from the lining of the tents.

OK, back on track now ....

Here's some more of my denim quilt squares I just decorated with the newly acquired MW Signature UHT-J275A, with it's 10 cams:

Update Saturday 7-7-12

Well, since I've last posted on my quilt thread I've decorated squares with our 401A, the Ideal Automatik, and the Alden.
Here's what the Ideal Automatik did:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...ithsquares.jpg

After finishing the patterns with the Alden I decided I'd try the 5 cord foot we bought some time back.
I put the foot on and my wife brought a bunch of rolls of brightly colored thread. I had to use a pointy tweezer to get the threads through the holes but it worked.
Here's a pic of the start of the test square.
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...readsq_a-1.jpg
I wanted to see how 5 threads would go around the corners and it worked very well. Old hat to some I'm sure, but new and interesting to me. Next one I do will be with the invisible thread and at least one more bright color. The gold / black variegated just didn't show up.

Here's the finished square:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...readsq_b-1.jpg

More updates later.

Joe
