Still kitting out the Singer Fashion Mate 252; presser feet ???
 

Are you getting tired of hearing about my efforts to restore my never-been-the-greatest, but love-her-anyway, circa-1975 Singer Fashion Mate 252? It was a gift from my dear Grandmother; I lugged it back and forth to Europe - twice - and coast-to-coast and north-to-south several times. Stitching all along the way.

I have three other, far superior, machines now - a Singer 15-91, a Pfaff 130, and a 10-years-new Bernina 230PE. Still, the Fashion Mate 252 began this life-journey with me and I'm not leaving her on the side of the road.

I had never seen the original owner's manual until the early 2000s. By then was I using the Bernie and my serger. I tucked the manual into the "Sewing Machines" binder until "someday." "Someday" seems to be 2015.

The next step was to actually read the manual, LOL. I learned what should have been included with the machine, if it had not been an out-of-the-box floor model!

On pages 45-47 of the manual they list "Special Accessories for Special Jobs" and show some of the attachments suggested for use with the FM 252.

I am already searching for the Blindstitch Hem Guide shown on pages 7 and 32. It's turning out to be an elusive item.

I've decided I'd also like the Edge Stitcher #36865 shown on page 46.

Now for my question (finally)! I found, and purchased, the Edge Stitcher from an Internet source. It is coming with a group of other Singer low shank feet. They are in a green box marked 160809.

The seller listed them as "Singer Featherweight Sewing Machine Attachments: 1261, 160359, 36865, 121441, 35931 - Fits Other Machines Too!" I'm getting all the items shown for under $20 including the shipping.

I know the Edge Stitcher will work; it has the same part number shown in the manual. Do you think the other feet will fit/work on the 15-91 and the Pfaff 130, even though they are "Featherweight" feet?

Don't tell me I have to find a Featherweight in order to use these cute bits! LOL

(I passed on the white Featherweight in my other post in order to save the money for the 201 I really want for my niece.)

Can you tell me a little bit about the three bigger parts?

Maybe not the Pfaff, I don't know. But FW feet are simply low shank feet so yes they will work.

They always list low shank Singer feet as "fitting a FW" in hopes it will bring more $$. They fit any low shank, straight stitch machine. BTW - I will look to see if I've got that blind hemming guide. I moved so much around, I'm not sure where all my extra Singer stuff ended up.

is the 252 a short shank zigzag machine? For fun I was looking on eBay - and the blind hem thing is a standard part of a lot of later sets (post green box sets) but most of them are slant. Most of them come in sets with snap on feet.

BTW - don't get too worried about Singer part numbers - Singer periodically updated part numbers, even though the basic foot didn't change. I did find a few short shank blind hemmer guides for sale on eBay, along with the slant. Most cost effective way it to find it in a set, so you have to know what it looks like. Several I've seen have the attachment point to slide down over the screw instead of from the side, but it's the same other than that.

Yes; the machine is a short shank zig-zag. It makes straight, zig-zag, and blind-stitch stitches; it has a "reverse" button and that's about it for its repertory!

Here's a photo of the owner's manual page showing the Blindstitch Hem Guide in the lower left corner.

I purchased a similar one from eBay, but the U-opening that slides under the presser foot screw (attachment point!) faces "down" on the one I bought. The one illustrated for the 252 points to the back. I'd love to find one of the original ones. Your explanation is far easier to understand!

I've been searching for feet and accessories for the three older machines and had noticed that some identical looking Singer feet could have different numbers. I wondered what was up with that. My Pfaff 130 had several Singer feet mixed in with the box of Pfaff Pfeet. (Sorry; I just love the Pfine Pfaff spelling!)

Three of the exact ones shown for my 252 -and one of their first cousins!

I had found one like shown in the far, upper right your photo, but the other style is what should have been included with the Fashion Mate 252.

I wonder why Singer changed their attachment point design?
