Tension stud issue for singer 201-2

Hey there! I am a vintage sewing machine novice and recently bought a singer 201-2. I took apart the tension to clean it (which was probably a mistake) because now I'm having trouble. I took the tension stud out and now the screws won't go back in properly to secure the stud... Any thoughts? I appreciate the help! Desperately trying to get this machine up and running!!

Melanie,

Welcome to the Quilting Board.

Been there, done that. Finally went to the TFSR
http://www.tfsr.org/publications/tec...machine_manual
and read and printed out the sections on top and bottom tensions. The information and photos are very good.
Many of us here use it often for the maintenance of our machines.

Oh I have read through that whole thing, my problem is getting the stud to even stay in place. The set screws won't keep it tight... any clue?

When you removed the set screw, did the slot get distorted at all? If it did, that could've messed up the threads at that end of the set screw...preventing it from being able to be screwed in far enough to press against the stud.

I didn't see any distortion, but I guess it's possible - they are old screws. I cleaned the screws and the inside because it was all a bit grimy.

It was probably just dirty...glad you got it. You're gonna LOVE that machine! I've got a 201-2 from 1938 that was my great aunt's, then my mom's...& now it's mine. It's sews so smooth & quiet. And makes the most beautiful straight stitches you've ever seen.
