Is there a Vintage Machine Shop thread but for cabinets?
 

I was gifted a cabinet and I don't know anything about it yet except that it's gorgeous and I hope my featherweight or 66 can go in it. Is there a thread out there for cabinets, what type, styles, sizes how to restore them anything like that here like there is for vintage machines?

[ATTACH=CONFIG]437744[/ATTACH]not that I know of, but there is no reason why you can't start one. I can find my Queen Anne with my 201 in it. I can't find mine but it looks just like this one. I don't have the stool, but I got the machine and the cabinet for $10.

I picked up a nice singer 127 treadle in the cabinet pictured at the top of the page this weekend at an auction. I love it.

If you are interested in Singer cabinets, I've got quite a collection. Still looking for the trapezoid one, though I already have the stool to go with it. Collecting cabinets takes up a lot more room than just collecting sewing machines.

As to restoring them, there are a lot of good woodworking sites where you can learn about restoring furniture.

Macybaby-wish you were closer I would love to see your collection of cabinets. I found the trapezoid with a 301-A in it and was so thrilled. I think I paid $55.00 for the 2 of them-no stool - but love sewing on a machine in a cabinet. That Queen Anne cabinet and stool are beautiful too shown above-a friend of mine got both and the seller didn't think the machine worked - but with a cleaning it did!! My friend was thrilled. Love these old Singers.

Electric. I have matching stools for almost all of the cabinets. Stools can be as expensive as the cabinet/machine!
40 queen anne - 401
40 -15-91, this is the newer style 40, it has a 3/4, 1/4 split top and a pop out table support
40 library table - 66, This is the older style cabinet 40. It has the 50/50 split top and a pull out support.
40 Library table non flip top - 66 (this has an insert that removes and teh machine pulls up - no flip top)

42 - 403 - I have the variation with the curved drawers, the picture shows the one with the curved cover panel and flat drawers behind it.

I also have a few that are newer than ISMAC's list, including the pointed leg with gold trim model that is quite common.

The one I"m after is #74, the trapezoid. I have a short bed 301 to put in it, but I'd snap up the cabinet with or without a machine included.

I've refinished three cabinets, and am working on the forth. I like to use Minwax Antique Oil finish (hand applied, like 6 coats) as it is very durable, but has the look/feel of the older finishes. Nothing I hate to see more than an antique cabinet with a polyurethane plastic looking shiny finish.

For more modern cabinets, I'll use General Finishes Salad Bowl. It is also hand applied, but gives a more modern look to the final product.

Some of the cabinets I have don't need a major refinish, but most have too many spots where the original finish is ruined.

I just got my first antique machine a few weeks ago. It is a Singer treadle. I have been wanting one for ages. A friend who works for an auctioneer found it for me. The machine seems to work, the wheel turns freely. I need a belt. I have started to work on cleaning up the cabinet. Last weed my 3 year ole GS was here. All of the sudden he was way too quiet. We all know what that means. I figured he was up to no good. He had pulled a chair up to the machine and was turning the wheel making driving noises. I wish I had taken a picture. It was so cute.

I caught mine standing on the treadle going for a joy ride one day.
