Threading my 221. I don't know which way to put the flat part of the needle??

Can someone direct me please? :) Very excited. I just got this yesterday and haven't gotten to sew a stitch yet.

I think someone gave a hint a while back that if you put it in with the round and flat parts doing the same direction as the round and flat parts of the feed dog plate, that is correct on the featherweights. In other words, flat part facing out/left and round part to the inside/right of the machine. I hope. :)

be sure to thread it right to left -- it won't catch the bobbin thread unless you do. There are also online instruction books if you didn't get one.

I would buy a book -- it will tell you how to oil, fix, and take things apart if you have trouble. They are very available.
Also look up the old machines thread -- He is so very helpful .

Thank you so much. I have it going but the thread on the bottom is all bunched up......? What should the setting be for tension...?

One hint also for your bobbin thread. When you are inserting the bobbin into the bobbin holder the thread should come down in the shape of a "P" as you are looking at it...not a "9".

The flat side goes to the left. Whenever I change the needle I still check to make sure - and I've been sewing on this same machine for nearly 40 years! The eye of the needle DOES NOT face the front and you thread from right to left. Enjoy!

this is changing the subject, but does anybody know where i can find a pattern to make a cover for my featherweight?

AngieS 02-01-2012 11:36 AM

I don't know. I've just seen the ones that you can buy that have the featherweight picture on them. Cute! Good luck. If I find something I'll let you know. Hugs.

I recently purchased a cover for my FW, on eBay, and it just came today. It is really nice and the price was excellent. The seller also states that she can custom make one with the fabric of your choice. This is the one that I bought:

it would behoove you to first read the manual before trying to sew on the machine. the oiling diagrams in particular
should be checked to see if it is properly oiled & lubed to begin sewing. tension, needle, etc are very clearly shown
in you manual. they are also available in all kinds of places on the Web. you will love the machine, but it does take
some care & regular oiling, cleaning, etc.

I LOVE the burgundy one!! These are adorable! Thanks. :)
