Treadle Machine on ebay ..... really?

I saw this ad on ebay for a New Home treadle machine. When I brought the photos up, I had to laugh. Treadle .... really?!?! Why is there a motor and wiring attached to it then? Am I missing something? Where did they come up with the date for the machine? Ebay is an interesting place to shop. You just never know what you will find or see.

I don't think people even had electricity in their homes in 1882...

crocee 09-03-2014 05:42 AM

That isn't even a treadle handwheel. Some folks have no idea what things are and just slap a date on it and call it good.

soman2 09-03-2014 05:47 AM

Yep!! Definitely antique. You can tell by the patina and the motor. Motor most likely a prototype in anticipation of the marvels of electricity that would come in the next 15-20 years. Truly a one of a kind. , :D.

I think that one's a turtle back. The motor's built in. You can't remove it without leaving a big hole in the back of the machine.
Belongs in the Giggles thread.

I just sent this guy a question on Ebay...I asked him if he could identify what that was in picture #4 (the motor)....and the strings that attached to it. What a ding dong!

Seems like an honest seller. Guess he has "read and been told" wrong. Happy the Guru's have corrected him. :)

Ah well...I suppose I'd rather see someone OVERvaluing a cool old machine rather than just trashing it.

plainjane 09-04-2014 05:30 AM

Seriously!

On the first one, I also contacted the seller and had a bit of discussing. They admitting knowing next to nothing about sewing machines, and the person that gave them the machine to sell told them all that info, and they believed them. I sent them pictures of what a 100 year old New Home treadle actually looks like - but I couldn't hook them into getting enthusiastic about vintage sewing machines.

I'm all for having educated eBay sellers - so many of them spend time going to garage sales to find this stuff, so the more people looking with the thought they can turn around and sell it, the more that I get to choose from on eBay. I live rural so going to garage sales to look for myself isn't a practical choice. I'd much rather pay $30 in shipping to get what I want, than pay $30 in gas and several hours and come up empty handed most days.

plainjane - thanks for sharing the link to the Singer machine for $250,00.00 Both hubby and I really enjoyed the belly laughs, especially the responses to the questions. I especially like the statement "ARE YOU A MILLIONARE
WITH EXTRA CASH, MAKE A DIFFERENCE. GIVE BACK!" What a hoot!!!!!!

Pretty ridiculous though there are many objects people would pay $250,000 for and in my mind I'd much prefer the 201.

I saw one better than that when I went to look at the listing. It is a "RARE SINGER" in a table that they will take apart the legs and so on. Only $250,000... Someone asked if the price was wrong, he replied "No it is correct". In the listing he claims it is for a lovely young ladie's education that it is being sold. Lots of crazies out there, lol.

Sory, I didn't finish reading all of the replies before I made my reply.

The comments in here are cracking me up! Thanks for brightening my day! :)

NopahDesertRat 09-06-2014 01:23 PM

I have seen several listed as treadles that are not. I don't think some people know what "treadle" means. I see that the listing is down now due to errors in the listing!!

SteveH 09-10-2014 01:48 PM

yep, and a Black machine is "always" a Singer....

The money he spent on the Ebay listing could have gone toward a meal at college.
I too don't have a problem asking Ebay sellers questions. Many don't know what they have and it won't hurt them to be a little more educated about their wares.
