Treadle Sewing Machine for Mother's Day
 

I just found a beautiful treadle sewing machine that was posted at my quilt guild meeting. It is in a cabinet with a "coffin" top. Don't know what it is called but that is what I call it. The cabinet is beautiful the machine is in excellent shape. I was happy with the price and excited when she showed me what was in the drawers. Two puzzle boxes with all parts. Plus many other goodies. I already have a treadle but just had to have this one. I paid $50.00 for it. My daughter has it at her house and is going to deliver it to my house as a mother's day gift. Husband can't get mad at this. He thinks I have plenty of machines and other equipment and fabric to last a life time. I do but this I couldn't pass up. I don't know how to post pictures and it is not here but I had to tell someone. I can't wait to get it. Yeah for me.:thumbup:

What a great find. And, if there is a wooden rectangle cover over the machine it is called a coffin lid or top. Here is a picture of mine. It is an 1852 Grover and Baker with a Walnut Coffin Lid.

It still needs to be cleaned up but I just love it.

I'm still getting the hang of my treadle. so days are really good and other days....well...NOT so good!

I love that walnut treadle, Twinkie. Very nice find.

The machine is not ready to be used. It is functional but my DH is going to re-do the machine and remove most of the rust (hopefully) The cabinet is in great shape. After all, it is 158 years old. The book "Encyclopedia of Sewing Machines" lists the value of the Grover and Baker (after it is cleaned up) at around $1,200. However I do have a 1903 Singer Model 27 that I have used. Sewing on a treadle takes practice. There are a lot of you tube videos that are helpful. The most important clue I received is to not put your feet side by side. Put your heel at the front (farthest away from you) of the foot rest and the toe of your other foot on the back (closest to you) of the foot rest and press with the heel and then with the toe until you get a rhythmic movement.
