Videos of Minerva in action .....

Click on the pics to play the videos ... but you all know that.

I got my wife Elaine to do some sewing on her crafts with Minerva, my Minnesota Mdl ~B~. When she first started she said: "It's too slow and noisy too." I laughed and said just push on the pedal she'll go faster.
Then I started making the videos.
The first video just shows the machine in action. The roaring is due to the flat spotted and out of round friction drive wheel. I'll make a new one as soon as I can.

Now in this second video I did something for those of you who have always wondered what goes on under the slide plates of a shuttle machine. Minerva's original front slide plate was replaced by a home made one eons ago so just for the fun of it I made a clear plastic slide plate so we could make this video. If you watch close you can see the shuttle shuttling back and forth.

Hope you enjoy them.

I'm glad bdshafer didn't talk her friend into keeping Minerva. She's become one of my favorites.

Joe and Elaine

PS: For those with these old Minnesotas, the needle being used is a MTx190 size 14 or 90 if you speak metric.
So you can't use a lack of needles as an excuse for not using your Minnesotas.

Loved the videos Joe. Minerva sounds like a little workhorse tractor. I am interested in the plastic bobbin cover though. Exactly what kind of plastic did you use and how did you make it? Sounds like a "fix" for many machines that are missing slide plates. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Joe. These are great videos.

Caroline,

I used a CD case that had a broken hinge. Just cut it with my Dremel tool then finished it with a file. The plastic is brittle so care must be taken.
Eventually if I can't find an actual OEM slide plate I'll find some steel or brass flat stock and make my own.

I liked seeing the shuttle move. Really cool!! Great videos, Joe. I'm going to try to get the motor on my Western Electric this weekend and do a video of it working. It's been a while, 'cuz I was working on a big quilt that took mucho time!! Anyway, hope I can get it done this weekend!! I'll let you know. I really like Minerva...she's a sweet little lady!!

I just got back from the hardware store. The roaring of the machine due to the flat spotted friction drive wheel got on our nerves so I'm going to try to make a new drive wheel. I have an old one from another machine and I pealed off the rubber. Once totally cleaned I'll put a new "tyre" on it and give it a try. If it works I just might do another video. Woooo Hoooo.

Fun to watch the old gal working her heart out, huh! First time I've ever seen a shuttle actually working....thanks!

Ah a Dremel tool. I have to add that one to my tool box. Maybe I will get myself one for father's day. FYI I was in Sears today and saw an awesome fushia pink double stacking tool chest and box. Wowser a girl can even get fushia pink tools to go in it. Perhaps that is one way my tools would not migrate out of my tool box to DD's workbench and tool box.

Awesome, loved the videos. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the videos. It was great watching the shuttle fly back and forth. You are very talented to make a plastic slide plate. Very cool.

So do I. I've got a good dozen of them now. I think. Or is it more? Don't know, not gonna count 'em.

Caroline, I feel your pain. I have to keep my tools in my sewing room (where DH is loath to enter) to keep track of them, because DH and DSS NEVER put things back when they are finished with them. I have no idea what he's done with my dremel tool.

J Miller 06-16-2012 08:23 AM

Me and my wife are the only two here, unless you count the 5 cats. I still can't keep track of my tools. I have certain places for certain tools. But since I've been working on sewing machines things seem to appear out of nowhere in places they should not be. Then I'll put them back where they belong and next time I want them I have to look for them.

Seems I've run out of room in my work area so I end up working on machines where ever we put them. Oh how I dream for my own bigger well organized work area.

My DH has more tools and toolboxes than Carter has little pills, so I have been driving him crazy with my requests for a pink tool box so he won't keep taking my tools. He wouldn't be caught dead with a pink tool! Last week he saw one of the sets-- he said he thought I was just making things up. . . However, did you check out the tools offered in pink. I cracked up when I saw the hammer. Can't imagine why I'd want a hammer that size with such as short handle. Doesn't make sense, no power, large base. Well, if you had trouble aiming maybe. Guess I'll just paint my old tools and keep messing with my machines! However, the tool box may come in handy.

Yes, I know that a lot of the tools are rather Girly and not very functional but some would work well. I am going to see if they have pink measuring tape. It seems as if DH and I are always arguing over who had his last and where is it.:D

So fun to watch we have several shuttles here waiting for us to work on. I can hardly wait to sew on them. Our treadle is really getting a work out.

Nagi 06-17-2012 08:58 PM

Joe,You did it again, another great job. love the videos

Christine- 06-17-2012 09:18 PM

Joe, it was a pleasure watching your videos! It was wonderful to see you, even more than the machines. :)

ShirlR 06-18-2012 06:44 AM

Thanks to both you and Elaine, Joe, for the videos! They were fun to watch. Hope you post some more. And I would also like to see a video after you put on the new drive wheel to hear the difference in the sound.

J Miller 06-18-2012 06:51 AM

Shirley, I'm planning on it. I've just got to get new rubber for the drive wheel. Turns out that the one I put the new rubber on has a larger hole in it and when the set screw is tightened it moves it off set enough on the motor shaft to make matters worse.

Woo Hoo! I'm going to Sears! I need a new tool chest! Speaking to "migrating" tools, I finally had to hide my tool chest in a place my husband never went - in the laundry room - ha ha!
