Vintage blocks now are in a quilt!

Last year I shared the story of my then 87 yr. old cousin who still quilts, even after moving into a nursing home. She showed me a set of beautifully hand embroidered blocks made many years before by an aunt of her's. She estimates these blocks to be 100 yrs old. She was determined to make these into a quilt. I encouraged her (but wondered, could she?).
A couple of weeks ago, I visited her and found her at her old Bernina machine, working at finishing a border and struggling with the attempts of getting her recently filled bobbin back into the machine with her shaking hands. When she saw me at her doorway she said she had just said a prayer for help. I helped get the bobbin inserted into the machine and drew the bobbin thread up for her. Wow, have you ever been told you were the answer to someone's prayer! Cool.
Today, I briefly visited again, and all that's left is to sandwich the quilt, which her daughter is coming to help her do tomorrow. Then, she plans on hand quilting and binding it herself. I just had to share my joy in this great woman. So proud of her!!!

That is beautiful & your cousin is beautiful as well. I am so glad you are helping her finish; she can be very proud.
Please repost another picture when it is done. The colors are lovely.

Very pretty quilt and cousin! So happy for her that she can still do so much and you were her answer to prayer.

Beautiful! No one knows how much work goes into that embroidery if they don't do it themselves. I'm constantly amazed at how creative people can be!

What an inspirational lady! Please tell her that she has done a marvelous job putting the quilt top together. Hope we get to see the finished quilt too!

So encouraging to hear that she still wants to do all she can. She and the quilt are beautiful!

A sweet smile, and beautiful top! Nice that she is still able to sew, and also have occasional help. :)

Praying I will be able to quilt when I am 87! What an inspiration to keep keeping on! She did a marvelous job.

This quilt will be so beautiful and special. Generations of your family contributed to it, and that is so incredibly, incredibly special. It should have a label with its history.

Yes! What an inspiration her story is. I also am in my 80's and keep trying. I am handicapped and not able to stand up very long due to a severe twisted and crooked spine. I have lost 7 1/2 inches in height in the last several years. But I can use precuts and make pretty blocks sitting down.

I would love to see your cousin's quilt finished, please post a picture later. Whoever is recipient of this quilt will be so blessed...it was even prayed over.

Amazing! She is beautiful. To be the answer to someone's prayer is to know you are in the right place at the right time!

Wonderful. I so appreciate hearing about people who are "old", and still able to make beautiful things. I have a friend who collapsed and was unresponsive for many months. She was over 85 at the time. She is now living in assisted living and able to continue making quilts with the help of another friend. It was this friend who got her back into quilting.

I'm not so young myself and hope to keep on for a long time. I have to sew up that stash, right? ? ?

Beautiful quilt...beautiful cousin....beautiful thing for you to do for her. The simplest things can make some one's day special.

ceblakeney 02-15-2016 08:25 AM

You should be proud! She has really done those wonderful blocks justice. Maybe she can find some quilting buddies to help her with the hand quilting.
