Vintage Clothing ?
I realize this is a quilting board, but some of the vintage machine people seem to have ties to Civil war era re- enactment, and I am looking to do some more sewing with my vintage machines and I am looking for a nice bib front shirt pattern ( later is fine too, think John Wayne ) So if any of you have info or sources feel free to contact me via PM I would appreciate it . Contact Here is Fine with me, but I don't want to go to far off the Forum topic.
Thank you ! Dan ( chronologically challenged in Alaska ) |

Have you looked in the pattern books at the fabric stores under the costumes section? You never know what you might find with McCall's, Simplicity and others. Good luck! froggyintexas

Have you looked at Simplicity pattern number 8473? It's an older pattern from 1987.

When I had to do costumes for my DD's one-act play contest in Victorian era, I went to the library for research. Of course, I then got a pattern from one of the pattern companies and improvised a little. Fun!

These are the drafting systems I have collected so far. I own the physical copy of Cornwells and McDowell, and I redid the entire Devere's scans page by page to straighten and cleanup the online copy I found. 6.3mb - Cornwells Victorian Cutting Method - 1888 http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga...hod - 1888.pdf 9.6mb - Garment Drafting Systems/Devere 1866 v2 http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga...re 1866 v2.pdf 518kb - Devere Rulers http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga...ere Rulers.pdf (note regarding the rulers PDF: if you print it with NO scaling, landscape, on 11x17 paper they will be accurate. 24.6mb - Devere's Ladies Costume Patterns http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga...e Patterns.pdf 2.2mb - McDowell - Using the machine http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga...he machine.jpg 62.4kb - McDowell Drafting Ad http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga...rafting Ad.jpg 2.9mb - McDowell instruction book 1885 http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/Ga... book 1885.pdf EDIT: to fix links |
SteveH- that is so neat! it's on my "someday" list to make a dress using the older methods, and the older machines too.
I do know one person on another board that makes period clothing, and she also does them as accurate as she can. However she goes back a bit older, and does a lot of hand sewing. Me - I'm OK using a treadle, but that is as far back as I want to go. This is her etsy shop, if anyone is curious about it, and wants to see some of her work. https://www.etsy.com/shop/Heddlesand...es?ref=si_shop |
