Vintage (older) machine repairs?
 

My SIL asked me if I knew about how to find repair shops interested in buying unfixable machines for "parts". I really dont want to get involved with this but I am directing this to the. Repair shops that repair machines...do you PAY/Buy Old machines or parts? Hers is a Viking probably from the early 1970's. I have pics if anyone is interested in chiming in. I suggested she go back to the repair shop that could not (would not?) Fix her machine and ask them if there us an interest. Sigh....

If someone buys old machines for parts it has to be something special. Those who happily service vintage machine often have a stack of parts and as time goes by it accumulates almost by itself. I don't know of any who buy up used machines, they take over what's handed in to their shop, left there and not serviced for various reasons. With vintage you sometimes have to visit more than one shop to find someone willing to take on the job. It's often not that it can't be fixed as much as the repair guy who doesn't want to take on the job to hunt down parts. It's hard to find spare drive belts for some Viking models from the 70s. I know some would be interested in these type of belts if it's in good condition. Another thing; buy the 70s everyting get's very plastic, it has to be a good model to be worth the time and effort spent on it.

I see broken items like sewing machine selling on eBay.

Controllers are the most valuable part it seems. People are always in need of a particular one for their machines. Now that they sell the solid state controllers, I wouldn't go for an old one, except for the plug for that model machine. The plugs are sometimes the hardest to find part of the equation. Needle ad bobbin plates are also something that is needed someitime.. If the motor was good, then it could be parted out. Ebay seems to be the place to find a buyer. The 70s machines virtually have no value. if they won't sew.

Facebook is a good place too. I recently sold a pile of machines in questionable shape to a nice lady who restores and sells on eBay and Facebook.
