i just got a free Singer 201 from craigs list along with the cabinet (one of the hinges is loose so DH has to fix that) it even came with all the original presser feet.

i just look it up and its from 1954. i have to clean her up and give her some oil but other than that she's perfect

i just love her!!

My first sewing machine was aused 201. That was 45 years ago & I still use it especially for upholstery etc. It has a really pretty stitch, nicer than my Pfaffs. I wouldn't think of parting with her...we've been through a lot together...lol!

You're going to love her!! I use mine quite a lot!

fabric_fancy 10-01-2010 07:58 PM

i think this is going to be my every day sewing machine.

it has more throat space then the modern singer i've been sewing on.

Charlee 10-01-2010 08:00 PM

The feed dogs drop too!! :) Does your machine have a manual with it?

Mariposa 10-01-2010 08:32 PM

Nice machine...how about your name "wild Irish Rose".

wvdek 10-01-2010 10:30 PM

Lucky you! Just a good cleaning and oiling ans she should be good as new.
I have the same cabinet. Yours looks darker, but still the same. My mom bought it new around 1961 or 1962. I have her old planter and a new runner on it. Wish I had the stool that goes with it.
Enjoy your finds.

Lucky you that the motor wasn't working. The 201s are wonderful to sew with. Have fun treadling!

Great find and at the best price. Wait until Lace Lady sees it she is from Ireland. I usually name mine after the lady I get them from or if it was a mother's or grandmother's then I use there name.

I found one of those 201's on CL for $30. Drove an hour to get it. It only had a zipper foot. All I wanted was the beautiful queen anne cabinet anyway. But I got it home and tried it out and fell in love. A couple weeks later the man I got it from called and said he found some bobbins, would I want them. He brought them to the place I work. Then months later I got a note at work. He had lost my phone number so he took a note for me to where I work one hour a week. They misplaced the note for a month. When I got the note I called him. He said he found a couple feet, would I like them. Sure, so we drove up there and he had a big box of stuff. It has a buttonholer, all kinds of feet, zigzagger, blind hemmer, beautiful manual and on and on. It was his wife's mother's sewing machine. She hated to part with it but they were moving to assisted living.

I'm setting out, in a little while, to pick one up....Woooo Hooooo. Found it on Craigslist. It is in a nice little #40 maple cabinet:

It doesn't have a cord but I don't care, I'll just pick one up. It does have the knee/foot pedal, though.

mine was all hard wired except the power cord

jlm5419 03-12-2011 08:44 AM

What a score! I love my 201, and you will surely enjoy yours just as much.

miriam 03-12-2011 08:50 AM

I'm thinking I would like mine better if I had a different foot on it - what is a free motion foot like to use? how does it work? Can you see what you are doing? I can see better with my 403 but it might just be the foot. I do like my 201 a lot.

kwendt 03-15-2011 11:27 AM

wow... the LUCK! I'm jealous! lol

miriam 03-15-2011 12:06 PM

I'm wondering how to rewire the 201 - I bet it would be safer. Kind of worries me to use it much. I had it set up to do one thing and a 403 to do zigzag. It is easier to see with the zigzag foot. I wonder about the free motion.
