Vintage White - Tension Help
 

Glee! People who know about Whites! I got one from a goodwill last year and I just LOVE it. Serial Number.
But, I've been getting inconsistent tension issues, even after having taken it to be serviced. Although, before I took it in, I tried to check it out myself and I'm worried I might have done irreparable damage.


I didn't understand how to take off the plate that hides the coiled tension spring, and I think I ended up bending it a little when trying to pry it open. (I realize how awful all this sounds). Anyhow, doing this I really mucked up the spring. The repairman replaced it.


But I'm still getting crappy tension on certain fabrics, no matter how much I make the upper tension tighter, it's still getting pulled too the bottom of the fabric. I've adjusted the bobbin tension as well to no avail. Sometimes it works fine, but usually on single layer cotton, something easy.


Its super frustrating. Do you think it could be because I've sort of bent (slightly) the silver plate that covers the tension coil?

My OSMG (old sewing machine guy) said tension has to do with the thread, the needle size, and the fabric. Maybe try some different combinations of these, don't use crummy thread or old dull needles. Keep trying. Your manual is at http://www.singerco.com/uploads/down...7-series-x.pdf

Thanks for the feedback. I'm certainly using new needles that are sized appropriate for the fabric weight, and my thread isn't that old. I'll double check all that before I use it again next time.

Holy Cats! That is my sewing machine. Never realized it was vintage - but then the fact that my husband gave it to me on our first anniversary and that was in 1961 and the machine was used then, it must be. I did get a new Singer about four years ago and I have my Mom's old White (which is newer than my old one). They all work great and soon I will attempt a quilt on Mom's White. I made many a quilt on the old White. My old White is getting old like me and is slowing down a tish, but I still love it. Use it! They love their back scratched once in a while!!!! Edie
