The "Visible" sewing machine, (vibrating shuttle type)

I really like these little ones, the New Home Midget or Little Worker, etc. I have 2 but only one shuttle and 1 bobbin. Well the complete one, was the 2nd lpurchased, (SMs seem to arrive in pairs) Once I was happy with the sewing on that one, I decided to get the old grungy one that was missing parts sewing with the shuttle from the other. It turned freely and thought I wouldn't have many challenges. well, 1st off the bobbin ran into the race in front and wouldn't go past it. It dawned on me though that you can remove the raceway (for lack of a better term,...what the shuttle rides against) It would also hit the needle and not want to go past. My 1st thought was "bent needlebar". But with a little more tinkering, and more cleaning.

A bit of trial and error was necessary to line up the raceway, both fore and aft, as well as place the needle at the best spot in its little groove.

the other adjustment that was necessary, and I don't have it perfect yet, as it's a little noisy, is the shuttle carrier. This is necessary in order to restore the correct geometry between the point of the shuttle, and the little hooked finger that holds the shuttle in. There must be room for the loop of thread to pass between the hooked finger and the shuttle. Initially I had it too tight, and it would break the upper thread instead of letting it pass over. You can see how critical the timing of the loop forming and the shuttle point entering the loop is.

All in all, it was nice to work on something so easily manageable, with everything easily removeable.

nice! Great photo essay as well!

One of those mini lockstitchers is definitely on my short list to acquire!

good job! nice photos! I hope you did't work on that nice table without something underneath! I would hate to see it having to be refinished because of scratches or something spilled / dripped on it.

shhhhhhh, I was hoping no one would notice!! The work bench doesn't get cleared often enough. I refinish the top on that table rather frequently anyway, it has a hard life. I guess I could find a piece of cardboard though:sew:
