What can I say--Blush, head down

Background, 5 yrs ago my DH was driving back and forth to out local lawn trimmings recycle, using back roads. He noticed that an old house was getting ready for demolish and a few things were out by the garbage can. He went back and forth several times and the things were still there, it started to rain and he told me I just could not let them sit in the rain, so he brought them home. the first one was a 8x4 foot solid top harvest table with hand carved legs. Beautiful! The second one- was a very old card table with some kind of funny opening on it, the top is a little warped the metal was rusty, but we decided to keep it anyway put in the back of garage and just forgot about it.

I have been collecting machines for a few months and just got a Singer 301, during the night I woke up from a sound sleep. The Dime dropped, there was a singer card table in Our garage!I got up, 3am, flash light in hand and went to check. Yup! but I could not get it out until today. So here it is I'm afraid it isn't for a 301:( but I wonder if I can modify it ( without harming it ) so the 301 could fit in it. I think it is a card table 308?
Sorry for the long story but how often do things like this happen?

Hope you enjoyed our journey in old card tables.

I would not cut it. I would find out the right machine.....

You'd be surprised how many of these cool stories happen here....

Thanks for sharing yours!
Steve

Please show us the table too. Would love to see it.

SteveH 08-26-2013 07:00 PM

when i clicked on the small picture between the two big ones it opened larger and was of the whole table top

Windblown 08-26-2013 08:18 PM

Steve I think she wants to see the harvest table that he found at the same time, I'll try to get one.
I was not going to cut it but add a small trim inside near the supports for the FW, the 301 rest on a ledge inside.

tessagin 08-26-2013 08:22 PM

I would clean that baby up and get her ready for whatever works.

Woo Hoo! Glad to be wrong on that one! Can't wait to see it. My GGF was a furniture maker in western NY in the early 20th century. I sat at one of his claw-foot tables twice on special occasions as a kid.

That fits a Featherweight - please do not cut it!!!

ArchaicArcane 08-27-2013 10:49 AM

If you flip that table over, you'll see that its 2 screws to remove each of the two brackets for the FW.
I would take those off, get some flat stock, drill holes in the FS to match the existing ones in the wood.

No need to cut anything.

Maybe make a 3rd, to support the machine at the front too. The FW is about the same height as the 301, so this should work... Just make sure that the length is right. I think it is, but my FW and 301 are both tucked away at the moment.

This way, if / when you end up with a FW, you can go back to its original state, or leave it convertible. And you don't ruin the resale value.

For the wood, try some Murphy's oil soap. Let it dry completely, give it a very light sand, clean it with a tack cloth and apply some Howard Feed N Wax. If you want to stain and seal, do that before the Feed N Wax.

Great story Windblown. The mental image of you in your jammies, flash light in hand, in your garage at 3:00am looking for the cardtable to verify it is a Singer cartable priceless.

AWESOME definitely don't cut the little cardtable. A Featherweight goes in there. I know because I have 2 FW and 1 cardtable. wish I had a table for my two 301's tho. We went to an auction last night in Minot and I found the treadle legs for a singer. Missing the pitman and the belt, but someone had screwed a small wood top to it. I figure to put a bigger top on it with a drop down on back and side to hold my Singer 1898 Sphinx that I have waiting for a table. We also found a big 4 window picture window and another side window for my new addition when he gets the frame up. Planning on a 12 deep by 26 wide leanto addition on the west side of my house where the old porch used to be. Will have a slab of cement for the floor and have heat running in duct work from the basement. Will have to get a couple of neighbors to help do the work.

*** Midnight Revelations ***
is what I call them are the best.

ArizonaKAT 08-28-2013 09:07 AM

Don't cut! The FW tables go for wayyyyyyyy more money than the 301 tables.

Go buy a featherweight :-)

Annaquilts 08-28-2013 09:15 AM

Yes this! If you do not want to get a Feather Weight you can sell it for most likely a good dime.

AArcane, Thank you so much this was exactly what I had in mind, when I was try to explain about it. My 301 is a short bed so it will fit in here just fine.
I just could never bring myself to harm a vintage piece like this, so no worries on that thought all.
I will have to start on the massive rust project first, I think with all of the horizontal pieces it will have to be Naval Jelly, anything small enough to take off I will use Evapo-rust on. What really worries me are the leg hinges, how to get them free of rust. Thank You again.

Windblown 08-28-2013 11:43 AM

Amyjo, Great find on the treadle irons and the windows it sounds like you are getting all fixed up for this great hobby with lots of extra space.

You know, I bet you could take the FW supports off, turn them upside down so the FW bracket part is facing down, and then reassemble. Instant 301 table, and no lost parts. I would probably still add the 3rd bracket.

Hmmm... I might have to do this myself. :)

The hinges or the springs that hold them open or closed? I think almost all of it will come apart and can be soaked or uh.... jellied. The springs can be bought from Glenn Williams in Florida, or you can make them with music wire and bake them in the oven to "strain relieve" them. DH did this for me for one hinge and a spring (discontinued) for the bobbin winder on my 115.

Wonderful story. Love that it has been claimed and can be put to use again with the right machine at some time.
peace

It looks like the one I have for my Featherweight 221.

1screech 08-30-2013 09:09 AM

It could very well be for a featherweight. I would not cut it either...just gives you an excuse to buy a FW.

This is for SteveH I searched all my pic. files for a view of the harvest table up, but they all had table linen and Food all over it. So it went out to the garage to get a pic. of it put way. this table is too big for our house, it has no leaves just one solid piece. We only use it for holidays, large summer get togethers. As you can tell from these my DH has it all squared away he is retired military, civil service. the pics are jumping all around and giving me fits tonight.

this is the best shot I could get of the carved legs, the reason they are up this high and the table top turned to the back is our D cat likes to sharpen her claws on everything.
And as I got the last shot of the table I noticed this very large Lady 11/2" right by my foot. It's that time of the year.. so be careful everyone when you are out look for that choice SM or card table. I nearly fainted.

back to the original thread.... I just found out I did something similar to the OP.

When I first started collecting i got a great deal on a Wheeler Wilson 12 (industrial) but it was literally in a box...

Well last night I pulled out the box hoping I could put it all together and have it up for the show this weekend in Willits, when I found a bag labeled "parts" stuffed in the pile of wood that was the drawer....

6 original Wheeler & Wilson #9 needle packs, 2x Boye #16 needle tubes (3x needles in each), three bobbins, and 1 bobbin case!!

Oh, and the main drive shaft for the treadle has 6 of the 18 ball bearings...
I am hoping to buy those today and get it back together tonight.

Windblown 09-05-2013 09:50 AM

Now I don't feel quite so bad SteveH, What a find, I know that those pieces for your Wheeler and Wilsons are hard to come by.
I thought the FW table was for some type of gambling, the removable piece lifting up so the cards or money could be placed there. My knowledge has expanded so far with this SM addiction, it just so great!
