What a deal

I got an unbelievable bargain yesterday. I stopped in the local thrift store and in the back alongside the toasters and coffee makers was a familiar box. I opened it to find a singer featherweight. marked $10.10. I bought it , cleaned, oiled, and adjusted it and it runs beautifully. Only problem was the case is musty and latches broken. what a steal. oh yes, yesterday was senior citizens day 10% off so I only paid 9.09.

I have never found one anywhere that I shop....at any price. HA You are very fortunate!!!

Envy! Congrats.

What a bargain!!! I have seen the old wooden cases stripped to the wood and they are nice. If the case linings are passed saving, it might be an option.

SHELTIE'SMAMA 10-25-2016 11:35 AM

I'd call that hitting the mother lode. So far I can only dream of the day when I might be lucky enough to have it happen to me. Enjoy!

Congratulations! What a deal. Try setting the case outside in the sun if that's an option. You can also try putting it in a plastic bag with some charcoal to absorb any odors as well. Look through the vintage section of this forum and you'll find quite a few threads on getting the musty smell out of the case.

No way!!! No way on earth!! You have no IDEA how jealous I am!! Happy for you, though.

Mariposa 10-25-2016 07:36 PM

Congrats on the fantastic score! Does she have a name yet? :)

This is our second featherweight, my wife paid 300 for the first one at the Brimfield, MA flea market. This one also had a blind hem and buttonhole attachments, each in original boxes with instructions. we also have a singer red eye treadle, a white rotary treadle, a 1930s era kenmore, and several modern machines. My wife pieces, and I quilt.

Well, I've just looked up what a FW box looks like. So now I know if I see one, I'll recognize it! How lucky for you!

Latches can be obtained on Ebay. Put half a cake of Irish Spring or Safebuard soap, still in the box inside the case. Also try airing it out in sunshine, taking care it doesn't get damp or dew during the process. The covers on the cases are a fabric used to cover music amplifiers. It is also available on Ebay. Sorry I forgot the name, but it ends in "tex". You can check with the featherweight users group for more information. Some have covered their cases in upholstery fabric if you don't care that it isn't original. Also, cases can be obtained on Ebay too. I got one for under $50. If the covering is just loose, you can use a decupodge medium, the glossy one safe for dish washers. Good luck.

Just don't get in a hurry in finding or restoring the case. If you are patient, it will turn out okay.

Jane Quilter 10-30-2016 08:40 AM

All featherweight boxes smell "musty." I thought it was the motor grease. But it is very familiar. I can smell a FAW in a room before I see it.
