What do you get for $15?

Two 401A's!

One was $5 and the other was $10 - purchased at different rummage locations but on the same day.

Cams 1-5 and various attachments were included with the $10 machine.

My girlfriend was positive I couldn't get 2 cabinet machines in my SUV. I told her I have gotten 3 in there before in one trip. :)

I have NO idea where I'm going to put these........ plus....... I already had a 401A.

I will probably oil them up a bit and send on to new homes.

Plenty of room in there for another machine...you could have easily gotten another...hehe.

Love the 401...I learned to sew on one of those....

chips88 09-12-2012 07:02 AM

wow nice find i can get two sewing machine and cabinet in my jeep and one in front seat.

J Miller 09-12-2012 07:36 AM

Shari,

Thanks for the pictures. I enjoyed them. Pick # 1 answered a question we had about the drip panel on our blond cabinet.

And we realized that IL is not the place to find bargains on sewing machines. We need another 401A, my wife and I keep arguing over whose machine it is. It's mine, no... it's mine ... we need another one.

OMG! Milwaukee. I've been looking for a 401 for my daugher who I converted to vintage with a 201. If you're seriously thinking about selling one or both, please pm me.

pinebeltquilter 09-13-2012 06:46 AM

I think you got a really good deal. I have one just like those that I bought in 1961 and that was top of the Singer line at that time. Seems like the price was about 300.00 which wasa lot at that time. Mine is not for sale and I hope my daughters will treasure it one day as that was the machine that made their clothes as the were growing up, including prom dresses.

Stitchit123 09-13-2012 08:07 AM

Lucky day for you at the Rummage sales. Don't ya just love 'em----I can get 2 cabinets in my back seat -2 in my trunk and one treadle on the front seat and 3 carry cased machines on the floor boards and as my son said at least a ton of fabric besides and my queen bed on the roof and all I drive is a 1999 Olds 88 LS. My family call my car Dawn's Hillbilly Truck

nstitches4u 09-13-2012 04:06 PM

You got a great deal with those machines and the cabinets. I got a 401A for FREE! It was in a yard sale out in the country this summer when it was soooo hot here that people didn't go outside unless necessary. It had been priced at $1.00, I'm told, and didn't sell. My hubby had told a local shop owner that I liked old machines, and his mother brought it in for him to give to me. It's just a portable, but that's OK with me. All of my machines, vintage and newer ones are portable. I'd love to get one in a cabinet some day. Love your cabinets, especially the $10.00 one.

Loved seeing the pictures. :) :) :)

haylillan 09-14-2012 09:03 AM

lucky you!

dreamboat 09-14-2012 11:09 AM

Great find. I have a singer 503 in a cabinet that I have had since 1963. It still works like a top. So it has been almost 50 years and still works. That's good.

k9dancer 09-16-2012 03:09 PM

You got a 401 for ten bucks? I am soooo jealous!

jojo47 11-30-2012 09:56 PM

My mom had a 401A before she got her Singer Golden Touch'n'Sew (which I now have). Great machine!

thepolyparrot 11-30-2012 10:11 PM

That's FABULOUS! I never run across those kinds of deals. I got a 201 for about $25, once because it was beat to smithereens and the wiring was terrible and it didn't have a case or a cabinet. That's the only good deal I can think of. I don't mind much though. I figure that if I spend $200-300 on a machine and getting it wired and refurbished, I've got a machine that is going to outlast anything on the market at that same price, so I figure that's a good deal in itself.

I'm always tickled pink to hear about someone getting such a great price on a good machine, though. Someone who loves these old gals and is willing to clean and refurb them deserves to get a fun break like that. Congratulations! :D

stillclock 11-30-2012 10:40 PM

wow! mine was $80 and in nowhere near as complete condition as that $10 machine.

score!!!!

Great score!

miriam 12-01-2012 03:33 AM

I don't run across deals like that either. If they are priced remotely low there is usually a reason. I have had to really work to get some of those to work and at a much steeper price - then when I do try to sell one it sets on CL for ever.

J Miller 12-01-2012 05:42 AM

Maybe it's a guy thing or just one of my personality quirks, but I've gotten the best deals sometimes by buying derelicts and rebuilding them. For instance the 500A we recently got and I did a thread on, cost us about $5.00. We put around $35.00 worth of parts in it and a lot of cleaning, adjusting and time. But it sews good. I've still got a bug or two to work out, but nothing major.

We just saw one on GW go for the high $60.00s which didn't include shipping. All told ours won't cost near that much.

Occasionally a true bargain falls in your lap. Like the Kenmore cabinet machine we got for $00.00, just go pick it up. Nice, nice, machine. A little oil, a little cleaning, and she sews.
I love it when the bargains fall in my lap.

Well Joe there was a reason it was $5 now wasn't there?

Well, actually the box of cams and attachments was $10.00 and the machine came with it. So we just figured we'd say $5.00 for each half.
