What is a featherweight?

I was just wondering what a featherweight was. I assume it was a sewing machine that weighed very little. Ha Ha

Google Singer Featherweight sewing machines. You will learn all you want to know and then some. I just got one, I love it.

Singer made a small machine with a flip down machine bed that is quite light (Featherweight). The antique machines come mostly in black but there are a couple of other colours. They can still be found on eBay and Craiglist but you have to really look for one in good shape and not too much $.

The cutest little machine ever made. No, I don't have one, but I love to see them on here. Remarkably reliable considering their age.

My mom always called her featherweight an "11 pound portable" - hence.....featherweight!

The Featherweight was designed to be lightweight and portable. They weigh only 12 pounds and are ideal for retreats and workshops. They'll fit down in a small crate or you can use the little cases they came in for transport. I love that I can get my FW, tools, fabric and extension cords all in one rolling tote when I go to sew away from home. The Featherweight is well known for ease of use and being well constructed. They are almost indestructible if you take care to oil and lubricate regularly and take care of them. Plus, they're just so darned cute! I have five of them and couldn't tell you which was my favorite!!! You can also find portable "card table" type tables that were sold to use with them, as well as the rare wooden cabinet to hold them. I have been so fortunate to have one of each of the tables.

Be careful- folks call other machines "featherweight". A friend picked up a FW extension table and sent it to me. I'd of course paid for it plus shipping, only to find it was for a white plastic Singer FW II.
