My sister found this machine in her garage and sent me this picture. Does anyone know what model it is? She's at work so can't give me any info from it. Thanks for your help.

maybe a singer 401?

Obsessed 12-23-2010 10:49 AM

Looks kind of like the Singer 401 I learned to sew on (my mom's machine) but it's a little hard to tell from that angle.

I too think it looks like a 401. It sure is in nice shape.

frugalfabrics 12-23-2010 11:36 AM

I got my grandmother's 401 when she passed away...she used it up until the day she died....

MaryStoaks 12-23-2010 03:26 PM

I'd say Singer 401 too.

cctx. 12-23-2010 06:53 PM

I think it's a 403 because I have a 401A and this one has a few more gadgets on it different from the 401A. Just my opinion though...

nursie76 12-23-2010 06:55 PM

I am not an expert, but I have 2 Singer 401A's, and they don't have the little deck extension that folds up like this one.

frugalfabrics 12-23-2010 07:09 PM

good point...I didn't notice the deck extension.

I think it does look like a nice little machine...so, is your sister going to let you adopt her?

cctx. 12-24-2010 02:40 PM

You're Lucky, that's a lovely machine. Thanks for sharing the information too.

Did you find out which model it is? I love the old tan sewing machines.

Tink's Mom 12-27-2010 03:50 PM

This is one of the first free arms??? Wow! I love these old Singers...

miriam 03-09-2011 06:06 PM

It is maybe a 401G they were made in Germany. I have one. I also have a 411G.

miriam 03-11-2011 01:52 AM

my bad - I didn't see the end extention door or the free arm. I have a 401g and a 411g - they look a lot like that. On the balance wheel side of the base, mine has a little plug for a hole so it could be made into a treadle - does anyone know where to get a balance wheel for that? My 411g has a detachable extension with two drawers in it to hold stuff.

It kind of reminds me of a Dressmaker that I used to have. Think I got it for solving a puzzle in a newspaper or something. Don't know if that is what it is or not. Haven't seen a
Dressmaker machine in years now.
