Welcome to the Vintage Sewing Machine thread. All of the Featherweight model sewing machines take the same size bobbins. The bobbins are available from many sources. Below are two of the sources for 221 bobbins.
http://www.sew-classic.com/ http://www.april1930s.com/index.html According to the ISMACS website your Featherweight was allotted 13 July 1936, one of 15,000. http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_...l-numbers.html If you want to find out all there is to know about Featherweights I suggest purchasing the book, Featherweight 221, The Perfect Portable by Nancy Johnson-Srebro. The book also has the 221 manual at the end of the book. |
You definitely have an older Featherweight but Singer never changed the bobbins in any of the Featherweight variations. Black ones, tan ones and the white ones all need the same narrow bobbin. Your local sewing machine store may carry Featherweight bobbins even if they sell other brands as many people have a Featherweight and want more bobbins. I think new machines were only sold with five bobbins (that's what my MIL got with her new machine purchased in 1950). There's lots of information on the web if you google Featherweight.

Congrats on FW! I would like to endorse SewClassic.com she is wonderful to do business with, I've purchased FW bobbins from her and they work great, low priced shipping too.
Here is a link to a free FW manual. http://www.singer-featherweight.com/...es/singfea.pdf |
Thanks for sharing the FW manual. It was interesting to read the pages. I'll know more if I ever have an opportunity to buy this coveted Featherweight.

AE 217104 serial number Thanks :) There are 4 different models that are black. The one with the Egyptian scroll on the end of the faceplate, the one with the straight lines on the end of the faceplate, the one from England that has a detachable table with a free arm, and the one that has the black crinkle finish. Within this group there are also Centennial model (1851-1951) badge, the red 'S' badge, the black badge, the entirely gold badge. Think that I got them all! There is a pale turquoise model and a tan model as well. Visit my website for parts and accessories: www.thequiltgal.com. |
