What Model Is This?
 

I'm talking to a gentleman who's selling this machine, but neither one of us knows what it is. The manual says it's a 201-2, but he's not 100% sure that it's the manual that goes with the machine. Sorry the pics are small; they're from his ad online.

Any ideas what it is, and what a fair price would be? He said it's in good shape and works fine. Thanks in advance! :)

It is a 201-2.

$40-$60 is likely what I would pay.

He said it works fine and is in good shape.

Thank you! :) He's asking $100 for it, but that's about what I'd pay if I bought one off eBay, by the time shipping was added in.

Edited to add: He's taking it to a flea market tomorrow, but if he doesn't sell it there, I'm supposed to go look at it Wednesday morning. We'll see how it goes.

I might go a little higher just because the 201-2 is so awesome.

From a distance it looks pretty good. If the cabinet veneer is OK and the machine performs resonably well, I feel $100 is reasonable. Those of us attempting resale, of course, are looking for bargains. As a keeper, I'd give a $100 for this machine and make a jewel out of it.

I've paid $150 for a similar outfit, but mine had a stool and the stools can easily cost $25- $50.

Around my area, that would be a very good price for the whole package - even if it didn't run.

If the hemstitcher has all the parts, it alone is worth $30 - but only if it has ALL the parts.

We paid about $75.00 - a senior discount for our 201-2 in the cabinet. It works superbly. But it didn't have the owners manual or accessories.

If that machine runs I'd not quibble over the price. I'd snag it and fix the cabinet and smile and grin all the time. :D

In my area of Ontario this machine would probably sell in the $50-$75 range as the cabinet is in poor shape. The machine and accessories look good but you may have to get it re-wired as the cords may be very limp and rubbery or hard and cracked. Vintage machines with tired wiring can give vicious shocks. I had to re-wire my 201-3 (it was a free to a good home deal with a decent cabinet) and it cost me $70 to have it re-wired, cleaned and serviced (timing and tension) but it now sews beautifully and is fast and powerful and the harp is big enough to quilt a King Sized quilt (feed dogs will drop for FM quilting).

Update: I'm guessing he sold it or changed his mind, because the ad appears to have been deleted from Craigslist. I haven't heard anything back from him. Oh well. It sounds like it would've been a good idea to replace the wiring anyway, and that's more than I want to fool with right now, so really it's just as well. :)

The wiring on machines of that vintage will more than likely need replacing, but it is really easy to do, and there are tutorials that take you step-by-step through the process, so it really shouldn't be a deal breaker, and can actually be a negotiating point.

Totallly agree. Don't let rewiring a machine determine a price. Most, if not all, vintage machines should be rewired. The process is not that complicated. Most likely there is someone in everyone's networking who can do rudimentary wiring required on SMs.

That being said, I'm sorry the machine is sold. But, don't despair, there are many out there.

I would have grabbed it. You can tell its a 201 by the little white light switch.
