Great suggestion. I think anytime I ask a "what is it" nobody should have the answer so I just have to buy it! Actually, someone saw the machine on ebay and sent me the link; thought I would know what the appendage is. Turns out it is "local pick up only" and is actually nearby; well, sort of. Bidding starts at 39.00 but think the buy-it-now is way over-priced. Nobody bidding on it, either. So, really, we don't know what it is? I asked the seller but have not heard back. It does look like a pincusion but that is a lotta metal for a pincusion! Thanks, everyone!

Caroline S seemed convinced it was a pin cushion but like you I assumed it was more functional. Why would they put one on the back of the machine?

It is most definitely a pin cushion. My mom had something very similar on one of her older machines.
