I wrote a history of the sewing machine some time ago, and it is now on my blog. There is lots of trivia, if it isn't too late for your talk. Like how Singer had 24 children by many different women, and a woman in Maine invented the zigzag stitch. I think my favorite is the story of the Sewing Machine Wars.

Nice article on sewing machine history. The beautiful "RH Macy and Co" sewing machine was made by Davis. The Combination schemed to bankrupt Davis in the early 1870's.

Thanks for this! I will read through it tonight. I'm brainstorming ideas at the moment and trying to set up a framework for the talk. Then I will start filing in details.

Don’t forget this little bit of trivia....

The stabber thingy goes up and down, whether there’s a finger under it or not.

CD in Oklahoma

That's called a Thread Injector - don't want to be using the wrong terminology here!

Oh! Good point. I wish you'd told me that before I learned that the hard way. :( 2 full stitches in before I stopped the machine, and it took weeks to heal because of its location right on the tip of my finger.

I think Singer makes a surgical machine for that kind of work.

Ha!! I can tell you it's not necessary. A .40A Featherweight can do it, no specialized equipment required!
