Wheeler and Wilson 8&9

I had a stellar day today. Saw a Wheeler and Wilson number 9, had to have it. Then I was offered the 8 too. Complete with several bobbins, accessories, and glass foots...Doesn't get better than that! All that was missing was the Coffin cover on the 8. :p

Very nice! I have both of those in my collection because I wanted them too. I really like them both and those glass feet are just the coolest things ever.

Beautiful machines!!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice! I've got an 8 and I can get to sew a few stitches, then it starts dropping stitches. I'm certain there is something wrong in the bobbin "slide" area. I just haven't had time to play with it.

Thanks for all the excitement, me too. I'll try to get them working soon. Both spin like a dream so these two I think want to sew...

I just bought a w9 yesterday. Lots of attachments in a carved box. 6 donut bobbins and about 6 needles in the round wooden holder. Will take pics and post tomorrow. Need to know best way to clean all the black grime off the decals which I can barely see. Mine is a 7 drawer and folds down into the cabinet

Congrats on your machine! I would love to have one of those carved boxes. Folks on this site mostly use sewing machine oil on cotton balls to clean the dirt off of the Japan and the decals. Be gentle. I think I remember hearing that the W9 decals are even more fragile than the Singer decals. My machine was clean enough that I didn't risk damaging it and I never did any cleaning on it. If I thought I needed to clean it I would start on the back somewhere inconspicuous and watch carefully to ensure I wasn't removing the decals.

Good luck! We like pictures!:)

Just dated it, Number 8: serial number 151948: Made in NYC, one of earliest models...approximate date: 1876

JudyTheSewer 07-08-2013 06:43 PM

Mine is numbered over 300,000 later than that. It is fun that you have a very early one.
