It has some chips here and there and needed the polishing. It's not a heavily used machine but it shows signs of being banged around a bit.
The bulb is from sew-classic. It pops in like the other bulbs, no modification necessary. The light fixture remained cool to the touch while I was using it last night. It's a whiter light than the traditional but it's nice and bright. |

Beautiful, nice going! A word of caution about using Simple Green though. You were lucky, your clear coat must be in good condition. You could have very well destroyed the decals. Any water based cleaner is generally a no-no on the black Japanned machines.

wow the LED bulbs are great.....several vendors at "Road to California" had them ....some were packaged with a piece of vinyl tubing as a bulb 'puller' .......the light is very bright and they do not heat up...no more burnt hands or arms when sewing.....loving it ! my 301A and my Daughters Featherweight 221 are now in the 21st century.

Great job on the clean up. You brought back memories of the machine I learned to sew on. My mom got married in 1941, so I'm assuming she got a machine that year. She made all of my sister's & my clothes. I don't remember how much metal her machine had. I do have the cabinet that the machine sat in, but with a 1960's Singer machine I got when I went to college.

Great clean up. You can also obtain LED bulbs, the correct type, at Ace hardware stores. Mine only stocks 2 per week but I've changed out probably 5 on the machines I use the most.

So, on to the art deco cabinet.
Dismantled. Ikea would be proud. I thought about painting it, but I have such a hard time painting wood that's never been painted. It just feels wrong. So, I'm going to stain it a darker, more rich color kind of like the floor is. There's a band of wood around the bottom that's stained a different color. It will be the same color as the rest of the desk. The trim on the front will be stained almost black. I think it'll still keep it's vintage charm but update it a little. The stool is going to be recovered in cow hide for some pizzazz. It's going to be sweet. I've already got the main part of the desk in the garage and stripped. |
