Wiring for motor quick question

Is 18 gauge lamp wire too lightweight going from the motor to the plug in on an old Morse machine, would 16 be better? WE have only one store close to buy stuff, may have to order it if 18 is too light, thanks.

18 gauge is standard, 16 too thick for knots and connections. I order black 18-2 wire SPT2 which has a thicker coat of insulation over the SPT1.

What Jon said ^ above. Although I do sometimes use cord with the SPT1 insulation if the original wiring was that way.
