wood pitman

I have come to own a treadle base and that is all there is. It has a wood pitman, I have been told these were used on the older treadle bases. I had the old machine and cabinet but it had been left in the weather and was completely ruined. I did salvage the base, we are in the process of refinishing it now. I was just wondering if anyone on here knows what year or years they used these wood pitmans. The base is also very heavy, a lot heaver than the other ones I have. If anyone has any info please let me know, thanks and have a wonderful week end. :)

Hi,

The treadle base would have to be ID'd to the SM maker and someone might possibly know. Davis used wood and steel pitman rods side by side, the wood being used on the economy models. I've heard Singer discontinued wood rods around a certain date.

Jon, it had an old model 27 Singer in it, it was so rusted uo could bot even see the serial #'s. It is a shame people do this to these beautiful machines. The cabinet was coming apart everywhere. I figure the machine was around 100 and then some. I have one here that is 104 years old but is not in the original cabinet. But this ine looks to be the original cabinet that come with the machine. Thanks for your reply.

Singer is supposed to be pre-1900 if they have the wooden pitman.

Thanks Gal, I knew it was old, it so much heavier than the other ones too. Have a great day. Joy

My 1906 Singer manual is the most recent I have showing a wood pitman. The one I have from 1912 shows a metal one. I don't have any manuals dated between those two.

My 1886 IF does have a wood pitman.
