Riccar Machine
Hi all,
I've never purchased a vintage machine before...but there is one in the thriftshop close to me, so I wondered if it was a 'find'' or not. It looks like this one:

I have no experience with Riccar machines but the post war Japanese made machines are good machines. One thing you may want to consider is check to see if the needle is left centered. It will sit to the far left and the fabric might be pulled by only one feed dog when sewing 1/4" seams.

I had a Riccar back in the day (circa 1970). My parents bought it for me for my 18th birthday (I think). I used that machine for about 15 years or so. Only had a couple problems with it. It seemed to sew just about anything. It was a bit later machine than the one pictured, but I'm betting it was the same quality.

Thanks for the input! I looked at it again yesterday...I'm thinking I will get it. The thrift shop supports one of our local schools (the one my son goes to! 
) , so anything I spend on it goes to a good cause!

They sold it to me to $10! It runs (we plugged it in). It's a Riccar Queen 660 RZ 304B. Looks like the straight stitch is in the center. Now I've got get her cleaned up and figure out how she works! How fun!

Thanks Penny Candy! That's exactly what I need! Hoping I'll have time tomorrow to play with it. The machine is a brick! It weighs a ton! There is zero plastic on it. I have an Elna from about 1968, which has a little plastic on it, so I'm sure the Riccar is older than that, but I haven't been able to find dates yet of when that model was manufactured. I was hoping the user manual would have a 'publication' date, but no luck.

Wow, you got it for 10 bucks ? !!! Is the wiring good throughout--no frays or knicks? That's my biggest fear w/ old machines, is that they'll shock me and/or catch fire. So paranoid about electrical fires, but wiring can be redone by anyone who knows what they're doing. (Personally I pay for electrical work or I else I panic the whole time my hubby is messin' with wires.)
