Default Have you ever seen???

a sewing machine like this? It's on CL and has a coffin top and is in a treadle base. They say it belonged to their grandmother and is a model 72. They're asking $150. Worth it or not?

A singer 72 is a specialty hemming machine, are you sure it's not a 27? That would make more sense, as a 27 is a domestic vibrating shuttle machine that was around about the right time to be in a coffin top case.

They said 72. I have a 27, and this one had thingies on top of it. I don't know how to make the pic any larger, since I copied it from CL. It was just very interesting. The fact that a 72 is a hemming machine probably accounts for the odd looking "accessories" attached to it. Thanks for sharing that info, Neighmond.

The things on top could be an old style tension... Can you post the Craigslist link?

Says in the listing it's a hemstitching machine. Not a 27...I have a fiddlebase 27 with a vibrating shuttle and it doesn't look anything like mine.

Its an industrial hemstitch machine. I have a similar head only. They're H.E.A.V.Y. I have no clue how mine works....but I know that people have paid ALOT of money for antique industrial heads if they're in working condition. Kinda surprised to see this in a regular treadle cabinet and not an industrial one. I wonder if the original owner worked in a dress shop or something.

for simplicity sake

and here is the info from ISMACS on the 71-12
"Flat bed. Link take-up. Horizontal rotating hook. Knee lifter. Speed 2500. Two needles; two hooks. Drop feed. For general work.Singer suggested replacement 119W5"

here is the artical about the 72w-19 which appears to be that machine.

The machine doesn't appear to be in great shape.
